    Hello, Final Cut folks,

I’m using a 1200A deck with a Kona 2, HDSDI, RS422. I’m ouputting 720p 23.98 Here’s the deal. Print to video works fine. Black and code works fine- the timecode is correct, etc. So I’m farily confident in my settings.

But in the edit to tape window, all the options, even preview, are grayed out, and yes I do have in/out marked in the sequence and In marked on the edit to tape window. Could this be related to an upgrade to 5.1.2?

I have a bunch of tapes to layoff ASAP.
    thanks in advance

Edit to Tape does NOT work with RS-422 control. You MUST use Firewire control to Edit to Tape. If your machine does not have the Firewire option, then Print to Tape is your only option.

As Panasonic explained it to me two years ago when I purchased this machine, “It only has one set of electronics.” I still don’t know what that means, but RS-422 is for playback control only.

    Hi Walter,

Is that ‘It doesn’t work with RS422’ statement based on the OP’s output hardware and/or deck?

I use Blackmagic’s Multibridge and Decklink – and RS-422 control works just fine controlling any of the decks in my facility for Edit to tape.

Well, I say just fine… still get that one frame error…

Just wondered what that related to, thanks for reading.

I am sure he is referring to the Panasonic 1200A deck. I have done many edit to tape operations with the Kona 2 card and other HD or SD decks which we bring in from time to time. The Panasonic 1200A deck has a few quirks like that, but it is a pretty compact, inexpensive and reliable deck. This particular quirk is still baffling.

You own a Panasonic 1200A and are able to Edit to Tape using RS-422?

    Ah – right.

No – that’s why I was asking. I wasn’t sure if you were saying the Kona was the problem, the 1200 was the problem, or just simply that you couldn’t use Rs422 (which, I really didn’t think you were saying).

My other Panasonic decks work fine though (AJD750’s) if that’s any help.

Thanks for clearing it up though.

We’re discussing the 1200A in this thread.

OK, the thing that makes this bizaare is that when you black and code a tape from final cut, it doesn’t let you set the start timecode if you are using firewire. So, you can black and code a tape with RS422, but then you cannot do an insert or assemble edit.

I black and code on the deck itself. Just feed black from FCP and set the TC manually on the deck.
