[Carlos Silva] “Improve Vegas “Media Manager””

    +1

If you want to see media management done right… take a look at Apple Final Cut Pro X. This is what the Vegas Pro Media Manager could have been had Sony integrated it better. FCP X has possibly the best media management in the industry right now. Their meta-tagging and smart collections are *exactly* what Sony was doing with the media manager but Apple built it right into the NLE instead of a bolt-on component that doesn’t integrate well. It’s sad to see that Sony was years ahead but couldn’t follow through on execution.

[Carlos Silva] “Since 2011 it isn’t updated. It is a handy to, but underdeveloped.”

This seemed to be a systemic problem for the Sony Creative Software Development Team. They seem to abandon ideas instead of improving on them. The Media Manager is one example, the ProType Titler is another. One release features that needed a few tweaks to be really useful but Sony immediately abandons them and leaves them to die.

    I hope MAGIX isn’t this short-sighted. 🙁

[Michael O'Connor] “Recently I have been asked to do a couple of projects but don’t have the knowledge about the latest formats to know if can still use what I have or if I need to look for a reasonably priced replacement.”

I guess the question is: What does the customer expect? Are they expecting you to deliver HD? If so, DV isn’t going to cut it. What is your final delivery format for the project?

[Michael O'Connor] “I don’t know that I would need to upgrade Vegas since the projects would be fairly basic”

That depends on if you have to upgrade to a new camera and if an old version 7 of Vegas Pro can ingest the video from a new camera. Vegas 7 can handle DV, HDV, AVCHD and XDCAM. The problem might be that newer cameras produce AVCHD that Vegas 7 can’t handle. AVC/H.264 has been a difficult format in general and has evolved over the years so if your software isn’t being updated along with the evolution, it might not work.

I’m guessing that in 2016 your client would expect something better quality than DV Widescreen even if it was for the web. HD 720p is kind of the bottom of the web formats these days.

August 4, 2016 at 12:22 pm in reply to: Question about a re-installation of Sony Vegas 13?

[Anthony Regar] “My main question is how should I go about uninstalling/reinstalling vegas such that I will not lose any presets made or plugins installed? Or will doing an uninstall not result in the loss of presets/etc? Thanks.”

Performing an uninstall will not remove your presets. You can safely uninstall and then reinstall and everything will be preserved.

Yea, I just didn’t want people to think that they could convert any MOV file to MP4 this way. I’m surprised that MPEG2 worked without using an MPG extension. That’s interesting.

  • I agree with Claude. If the majority of the footage is 24p then I would set my timeline for 24p and deliver in 24p. Also, going from 30p to 24p only requires dropping existing frames while going from 24p to 30p requires synthesizing new frames from where there are none! In my experience the former looks better than the latter.

  • [Blake Gibson] “Also John, have you ever tried LT and Proxy?”

Yes, I have no problems with Apple ProRes 422 LT or Apple ProRes 422 Proxy files with Vegas Pro 13. Both video and audio show up and playback just fine. I just tested to make sure. No problems at all. I created the ProRes 422 files with Apple Final Cut Pro X.

August 3, 2016 at 9:31 pm in reply to: Sony vegas will not support MOV files???

[László Kovács] “ffmpeg -i input.mov -vcodec copy -acodec copy output.mp4

That’s done in seconds, because there’s no reencodigng. “

It’s important to note that, this will only work if the MOV file contains AVC/H.264 MPEG4 video. You cannot copy without encoding unless the codecs match so, for example, this will not work if the MOV file contains Apple ProRes 422 video.

    But I agree, that’s a great way to re-wrap AVC/H.264 files from MOV to MP4 without re-encoding.

August 3, 2016 at 9:30 pm in reply to: Sony vegas will not support MOV files???

[Dave Haynie] “You might try copying your .MOV file to a .MP4 file. That sometimes works, though not always.”

That only works if the MOV file contains AVC/H.264 codec. If it contains Avid DNxHD, or ProRes, or MJPEG, or something else that will not work. It only worked for MPEG4 codecs.

[Colin Hay] “I guess my options are either to reinstall Quicktime OR convert the files to another format”

Or buy a Mac! That’s what I did. My iPhone and iPad videos edit effortlessly in Final Cut Pro X on my Mac. 😉

Just re-install QuickTime and stop worrying. This is what Vegas Pro needs to process your MOV files. Just give it what it needs.
