What format is your source video? Vegas Pro 11 is quite old and might not handle newer video formats very well which could be your problem. The other problem may be that you are trying to do too much with only a 32-bit program which is limited to only 2GB of memory.

You can try rendering the sped video alone in a separate project, then drop the rendered video back into your main project. This will take the speed change out of the equation.

Whatever it is, it is proprietary to the platform you are using so I don’t see how it could be automated. For example, YouTube annotations must be created in their own on-line video editor so that would be impossible to add automatically unless you used a keystroke recorder and playback. I don’t know what Amazon uses but again, it’s probably proprietary so there is no way to pass that information in with your video.

The old Windows Media Video (WMV) format had a way to imbedding markers that Vegas Pro supports but that is an outdated technology that doesn’t work on the majority of Internet browsing devices (i.e., smart phones and tablets) and even YouTube Annotations don’t work on smart phones so there really isn’t any reliable way to accomplish this that I can see.

Besides, “hover” is a desktop concept. There is no concept of “hover” on a smartphone or tablet so you would not want to incorporate that into any “future thinking” design for Internet video because most people would never be able to use it. You would have to guarantee that your users would only be watching your video on a desktop computer for it to work.

[Francois Blawat] “1: Upgrading Production Assistant? Current version I have that I purchased from SONY was v2.0.11.0. Will there be any newer versions? Like to see animated previews within the viewer?”

Production Assistant Pro 3.0 is available from MAGIX here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-production-assistant-pro/

It has no new functionality over the Sony 2.0 version except that it works with Vegas Pro 14.0. As you may know, MAGIX changed the Script API to make it non-compatable with previous versions so we had to make changes to get it to work with MAGIX Vegas Pro.

[Francois Blawat] “2: Will there be further GrafPak’s past v8?”

No the GrafPaks have been discontinued in favor of TitleStrips which are a platform neutral format.

[Francois Blawat] “3: Will there be any further BackPak past v1? I would like to see more animated backgrounds for the Motion Tool”

    Nothing is currently planned.

[Francois Blawat] “4: Will there be any further TitleStrips past v4? “

That is a possibility but we are not actively working on any at the moment.

[Francois Blawat] “5: Will there be any further ReelPak’s past your original releases?”

No, the ReelPaks have been discontinued in favor of the new Movie Looks.

[Francois Blawat] “6: Will there by any further updates to the Fasst Apps that were released?”

That is a possibility but there are currently none under development.

[Francois Blawat] “Side Note: How does one re-download the CinemaLooks Fasst Apps that were purchased from SONY? I do not see any links on the Vasst website? This applies also to the TitleStrips & Production Assistant installer packages.”

Send an email to VASST Support and we will send you links to download the latest installers for the products that you have purchased.

[Francois Blawat] “I was just curious since I know there are MANY issues relating to support from MAGIX, but I really do love using the VASST apps that were created for us Vegas users. I hope that VASST can get their online sales working again under their control.”

Thanks for the feedback and I appreciate your enthusiasm for our products. I hope we can get sales going again soon too. 😉

  • Interesting that you had a firewire port all along. Frustrating that the cable was bad. That’s something you don’t expect. Glad you got it all sorted out.

[David Mayer] “Specifically I need to add bullet points on screen, with animation. Is there a different term for this type of plugin?”

Take a look at what Ripple Training has to offer with their Plug-ins. Specifically Bullets (which might be just what you are looking for) and Titlemations which are more subtle for flying/wiping in text.

  • There is also Zoom and Appear.in

Both will allow you to share your desktop and both work reasonably well in limited bandwidth environments. Zoom will limit you to 40 minutes with their free account but supports up 100 participants. Appear.in only works with Chrome, Firefox, or mobile devices but is unlimited time and supports up to 8 people.

We use to use Skype and Google Hangouts, but have found that these others services have much higher quality, especially when multiple people join.

July 4, 2017 at 3:06 pm in reply to: Compressing a quicktime file

[Terry Flaxton] “So: what am I doing wrong and what can I do to get a reasonable 5 gig file?”

There is only one thing that determines file size and that’s bitrate. If you want a 5GB file you must first determine how long the video is. Then depending on the length of the video you can do the math to determine the bitrate needed achieve that size. There are many bitrate calculators available on the Internet to help you.

For example: to get 1 hour of AVC/H.264 video into a 5GB file you would use an average bitrate of approximately 8Mbps (8,000 Kbps). Using the “multi-pass” option will produce the highest quality for a given bitrate.

So whatever setting you use in Compressor, adjust the Average Bitrate to get the file size where you need it to be once you determine that with a bitrate calculator.

  • [Jeff David] “Was the tech rep wrong? I know there can be lots of wrong info given out. Had I needed to try the VIDBOX I was going to call up the company first and confirm that it would transfer the hd video. The Bestbuy rep claimed it would. “

YES! The rep was wrong and it sounds like you know now that the VIDBOX is an SD device for capturing VHS tapes and is not appropriate for capturing HD video. It would have given you an analog SD version of your digital HD video which is not what you want.

There is no way to get digital HDV video from a Firewire camera except by using a Firewire cable and Firewire port.

If you had a Mac, you could buy a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter which would capture video from an HDV camera but there is no way to do this using USB.

[Jeff David] “I know from prior research that PINNACLE use to make a box that would allow the transfer but they stopped making it and I could not find any on Amazon or uh that other service.”

The PINNACLE device was garbage. It had serious audio sync problems. I think it was called the DAZZLE but it was for VHS tapes in SD as well.

The only way that I know of to get HD into a computer via USB is to use a device like the Hauppauge HD PVR. That is designed to record HD TV via USB. You could plug the Component output of your HD camera into it (assuming your camera has component out) and record it just as if it were an HD TV recording. Having said that, you would NOT be getting the high quality HDV MPEG-2 video that your camera shot. You would be getting a re-encoded AVC/H.264 video of lower quality. So it’s not the solution that you would want to use for video that you want to edit. As I said, there is no way to get the original footage from a firewire camera except by using a firewire cable and firewire port.

  • [Jeff David] “The tech dude in the store I bought the 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable from had mentioned if the new cable did not work, I could buy a usb to firewire cable and get the footage into my computer by connecting to the usb port on my computer instead of the firewire port. “

This guy has no clue. A USB to Firewire cable cannot transfer any data. It is designed to charge firewire devices from a USB port. It is not a USB to Firewire converter (such a device does not exist), all it carries is electrical current.

It’s pretty obvious that this guy doesn’t work with video otherwise he would know that this would never work. I would not be taking any video advice from him.

July 4, 2017 at 1:26 pm in reply to: Scripting workflow:

You could look into the Windows API itself. I believe it has a way of playing back keystrokes using SendKeys in C# so that you can press the menu keys in Vegas Pro but I’ve never tried it. That’s something to look into.
