If you are trying to match two clips, you can place the Timeline Cursor over the first clip and copy it to your Clipboard. Then move the Timeline Cursor over the clip you want to work on and enable the Clipboard option and select either half of the screen and whatever is on the clipboard will be split screen with your live clip. This makes it very easy to match color, contrast, masks, position, or whatever. Very useful.

I know of no other NLE that has this feature.

Glad that worked. Actually it’s an extremely useful setting to be able to get a quick before and after view of what your plug-ins are doing to your video but if you don’t know it’s enabled… I agree the results are a bit strange. ???? (now you know)

What are we looking at in that picture?

• A screen capture of the FCP X Preview window?
• A screen capture of the source footage in QuickTime player?
• A screen capture of the final render in some player?

How are you ingesting the footage? (i.e., what is you workflow from camera to hard drive?)

The Canon XA10 shoots interlaced AVCHD footage. I edit interlace AVCHD all the time and I have never seen the interlacing. I don’t do anything special. I drop the footage in FCP X and it shows up fine on the preview. Then I render to my final format which is usually progressive H.264. No issues at all. I never have to manual deinterlace (shouldn’t be needed).

A bit? Do you realize that FCP 7 was *discontinued* 7 year ago and FCP 6 is even older and neither run on the latest macOS? Why would you want to bother to learn software that was discontinued so long ago?

If you have used Windows Movie Maker, I would recommend that you start with Apple iMovie and then eventually get Final Cut Pro X when you feel you need more capability and have the money. It just makes no sense to learn discontinued software. It will only bring you grief and teach you an antiquated way of editing.

Well… you just answered your own question but you probably don’t realize it. Here’s why:

Yea, BUT… You have a 7 year old iMac that has a Sandy Bridge Core i7 which is several generations older than the Kaby Lake Core i7 that is in the currently shipping iMacs. (i.e., Sandy Bridge -> Ivy Bridge -> Haswell -> Broadwell -> Skylake -> Kaby Lake) So from the laymen perspective, you have a Core i7 and the new Macs have a Core i7 so they should be the same. NOT! The current Core i7 processors are way more powerful than what you have. You can’t just look at the numbers. The architecture of the processor matters a great deal. Your processor is one of the first quad core processors and just isn’t up to the task of editing native 4K.

First Premiere is not the fastest NLE on a Mac… Final Cut Pro X is, (and I can provide links to benchmarks to prove it) which is why iMovie is faster (which you saw for yourself). So you would get better performance by switching to FCP X but I realize that’s probably not an option for you. Second, what format are you shooting in? H.264 vs H.265 because H.265 is much, much harder to decode than H.264. I’m not sure what the iPhone 6S can shoot. Switching to H.264 may help.

I don’t. Expecting to edit native 4K on a 7 year old computer is wishful thinking at best. You should be very happy that you can edit 4K ProRes. I’m guessing a 7 year old Windows PC can’t begin to edit 4K at all! (I say that because I’ve only owned a Mac for 4 years so 7 years ago I was using a Sandy Bridge Quad Core i7 Windows PC and it had a hard time editing AVCHD never mind 4K!)

IMHO, not fixable. It’s just a matter of not having enough processing power. You can’t expect to switch to a format like 4K that has 4x the resolution of HD and expect to continue to use the same old computer to process it. Most people upgrade their workstations when moving to 4K. It may be time to buy a new Mac but since you can edit 4K ProRes why bother. Also, Final Cut Pro X has a nice proxy workflow that makes this whole thing rather painless. I don’t know if Premiere has anything like it but you should look into that..

…and to answer your original question:

The fact that you iMac has a 27″ display has no bearing on anything. The fact that it was manufactured in 2011 does. I would rephrase it like this:

“Why can my 3 year old iPhone 6S edit 4K video but my 7 year old iMac can’t?”

Because the iPhone is newer and optimized to shoot and edit 4K, and your iMac over twice as old and made before 4K even existed. 😉

I thought I had read that Windows 7 has a problem with some Firewire devices requiring that you use the “Legacy” Firewire drivers. Here is an article about it:

It is built-in for all Apple SSD’s and the ones you buy from OWC which are supported by the Trim support that is already part of macOS.

This article seems to suggest that as of Mac OS X 10.10.4 Yosemite you can enable Trim for 3rd party SSD’s if it’s not already enabled.

If that doesn’t work, you can use something like Trim Enabler from Cindori which I have used to provide Trim support for non-Apple drives but if you have an Apple SSD there is nothing more for you to do.

That’s correct. Having the files be managed in the Library never deletes the originals.

Then you probably need to send him the files that are still on your RAID. If you already did that, you may have missed a few.

What I was suggesting is to take an empty external hard drive with nothing on it. Copy the Library to that drive. Open that Library in FCP X and Consolidate it. That will copy every file that the project needs to the Library on the external hard drive. Then send him that Library knowing that everything he needs is in it. It was just a way of solving your immediate problem.

I always have the Library manage my media so I don’t have this problem but I realize that some people have workflows that don’t allow this but IMHO, if you can use managed media it is way more simple than trying to manage folders on a RAID manually.

Oh yea, I forgot that Sony Linear Wipe doesn’t have a border. I always use BCC Linear Wipe from Boris Continuum Complete which does have a border and is exactly the transition he’s looking for.
