    > If there are other fixes out there I would like to give them a try beforehand

Since you are generating this 24p from footage that is not 24p, you might want to look at VASST Celluloid Film Looks. For $24.95 it will correctly render your footage to 24p, set up your project correctly to work in 24p, and give you a nice collection of popular color grading film looks to work with. There is a 15-day free trial to see if you like it before you buy it. You can also add more Film Looks (called ReelPaks) later. In the interest of full disclosure I work at VASST so don’t just take my word for it… download the product and see for yourself.

As I said in my previous post, I believe the “ghost” frames you are seeing are pulldown frames. If you render to DV AVI you will never get rid of this because NTSC DV AVI does not support 24p without adding pulldown to keep the frame rate at 29.970. WMV should not give you this problem if you customize the settings to use a framerate of 23.976. Otherwise the default WMV template will add the same pulldown frames.

June 26, 2008 at 10:12 pm in reply to: Video Color to look more like film

I would start with the Color Corrector and Color Curves. The Color Corrector will allow you to easily play with saturation and tone, and Color Curves will allow you to change the gamma to be more film like.

There are plug-ins like VASST Celluloid which achieve quite a number of well known film looks using only the Vegas FX. It is an excellent example of what can be achieved right in Vegas with the right knowledge. Then there are tools like Magic Bullet Looks that have their own filters for achieving the film look.

Don’t forget that a lot of the “film look” is lighting for the correct mood in the first place along with color grading (which you have asked about) and the cadence of 24p footage. But the Color Corrector and Color Curves should get you started.

I’m not quite sure I understand what you are seeing but since you said you work in 24p I’m wondering if these are pulldown frames that you are referring to? When you work in 24p you want to set your project to 24p and make sure your footage is 24p and that you render to 24p without pulldown. Then you will only get the frames that you originally shot; unless, of course, the camera you used added pulldown to make 24p into 60i when it recorded it.

So I guess the question are:

Where does your 24p source come from? What camera/format?

Have you set your project to 24p in Vegas? Which template?

Are you rendering to 24p? Which rendering template?

What Jeremy is basically saying is that no PC can handle AVCHD because of it’s compression algorithm (so don’t feel bad). I would plan to work in another format that is more CPU friendly and save yourself a lot of headaches.

Thanks Terry. I’m glad you were able to follow it. I’m a visual learner so I like pictures with circles and arrows myself. 😉 I just threw it together this afternoon in between doing other thing so I wasn’t sure if it was the right level of detail. Hopefully it will be help to others.

    Ulf,

No problem but the explanation is beyond a forum post so I’ve created a tutorial for you and placed it on my web site. Here is a link to the new tutorial: Creating a Split Screen using A Mask. Please let me know if any part of it is unclear to you and I’ll try to explain it better. Chances are if you didn’t understand it, someone else might not either.

Instead of making the split screen with the Pan/Crop controls themselves, make it with the Mask in Pan/Crop. Then moving the Pan/Crop Frame will move the cropped video anywhere on the screen you want at the event level and not affect the track.

    > What happens to the HARD FLASH transition when it doesn’t have anything to “transit to”?

If you do use multiple tracks, just make a fade on each event as if it was a crossfade on a single track and apply the HARD FLASH to both fades. So fade out the top event and fade in the bottom one. It will behave just as if they were on the same track.

June 25, 2008 at 3:11 am in reply to: Different ADVC-100 question, and HD output Query

    Dave,

A couple of things to keep in mind. Preview is not multi-threaded in Vegas so it is only using one of your cores. If, for example, your old PC was a 3.2Ghz P4 and your new PC is a 2.4Ghz DualCore, the new PC is actually a lot slower for single threaded tasks like preview.

My QuadCore is 2.66Ghz and I can preview HDV M2T files at Preview Full with full frames 29.97fps but on Good Full it drops down to 19fps and at Best Full I get 9fps. All the time my CPU is only at 25% becasue it’s only using 1 of my 4 cores. 🙁

If you use the ADVC110 with HD it will convert that to DV and I assume the playback will be much worse due to the rescaling.

It sounds like you have a very small timeline selection at the start of your project. Try turning looping off and make a selection somewhere else on the timeline and it should go away.

    > Do you all mainly just set up a second computer monitor and have Vegas output to that

I use a secondary monitor. This is the easiest and least expensive option. I have two Samsung SyncMaster 215TW’s which give me more than enough editing space. Smooth playback is dependent on the power of your CPU’s and how much post processing you’ve done. I can view unprocessed HDV at full frame rates until I start color correcting. Then it slows down because each frame must be processed before it is displayed.
