Video Color to look more like film
Posted by Dave Petteruto on June 26, 2008 at 10:01 pmHello,
Does anyone have any basic settings that I can use in Vegas (7) to get my video’s color to look more like film. I know there are lots variables, but I would just like to have the color a bit more saturated (I think)! Thanks

June 26, 2008 at 10:12 pmI would start with the Color Corrector and Color Curves. The Color Corrector will allow you to easily play with saturation and tone, and Color Curves will allow you to change the gamma to be more film like.
There are plug-ins like VASST Celluloid which achieve quite a number of well known film looks using only the Vegas FX. It is an excellent example of what can be achieved right in Vegas with the right knowledge. Then there are tools like Magic Bullet Looks that have their own filters for achieving the film look.
Don’t forget that a lot of the “film look” is lighting for the correct mood in the first place along with color grading (which you have asked about) and the cadence of 24p footage. But the Color Corrector and Color Curves should get you started.

June 26, 2008 at 10:28 pmAs john recommends…
start with color corrector and color curves first, not many people realize how versatile and advanced sony vegas color curves is in
crushing the blacks and achieving an overall gamma tone similar to film.
Yes you have those two major plugins that emulate a film tone beautifully to your footage, but if you cant afford those right now,
color corrector and color curves are the way to go.Steve Rhoden

June 27, 2008 at 12:48 amDave, just so you know, you can get a stripped-down version of Magic Bullet Filmlooks in the downloads area of the Sony Media Software site. It’s under Vegas ver. 5, but it works with my version (6), so it should work for you, as well. Just make sure after you download the installer, to install the software in your plug-ins folder in your Vegas program.
