Sony Vegas 7: Help with split screen and moving..
Hello! 🙂
My first post here, so it’s probably a newbie question, but here goes..
I’m trying to make an “music video”, so I’ve recorded myself playing the guitar in different angels along a music track. First you’ll just see me in “full screen”, and then I’ve inserted a HARDFLASH from the transition -menu, to separate what happens next;
Now I want to have 2 of the 5 video-angles I’ve recorded to be showing at the same time; They split the screen horizontal and occupy 50 % each. So the upper part is for VIDEO1 and the lower part for VIDEO2.
I’ve MANAGED to CROP the two videos, by right-clicking and choosing the VIDEO EVENT PAN/CROP option. But, how can I MOVE the two parts UP and DOWN?
I’ve tried the TRACK MOTION -button/option to the far left (on the track-bar), and this is somewhat in the correct direction of what I want to do (by moving the square up or down). But, just almost! The PROBLEM here, is that this modification alters the WHOLE video track! I’ve split up VIDEO1 in many parts (using the S -shortcut), but I only want this modification (the moving-part) to be affecting just the ONE part I’ve highlighted (example from 00:30 to 00:46). The CROPPING is OK, though, and affects only the part I want, but when I use the TRACK MOTION option it changes the whole track..
Hope you understand my problem?! And, can you help me? 🙂

First of all, your English is fine.
What I would suggest is to put each split clip on it’s own track.
This way, you avoid having everything else on that track affected.
If that creates too many tracks for you to deal with, another solution is to use keyframes at the desired split points to control clip movement. -

Yes, that would be an good idea, i guess! But, a small and quick question (before I try myself); What happens to the HARD FLASH transition when it doesn’t have anything to “transit to”? Like if I split VIDEO1 and keep VIDEO1a on TRACK1 and move VIDEO1b to TRACK2, and I have a HARD FLASH at end of VIDEO1a -but a blank part after that (since I’ve moved that part down), will it still FLASH?
Hmm.. Sorry, I’m a newbie, but how can I control keyframes and such you speak of!?

Instead of making the split screen with the Pan/Crop controls themselves, make it with the Mask in Pan/Crop. Then moving the Pan/Crop Frame will move the cropped video anywhere on the screen you want at the event level and not affect the track.

If you do use multiple tracks, just make a fade on each event as if it was a crossfade on a single track and apply the HARD FLASH to both fades. So fade out the top event and fade in the bottom one. It will behave just as if they were on the same track.

I’m afraid you have to guide me a bit more on the first one there.. (sorry) ..
I’ve now marked the split-section that I want to alter, right-clicked and chosen VIDEO EVENT PAN/CROP ..

Now, what I want to do, is to CROP the video so only the guitar-part is visible, and then put that part at the BOTTOM of the finished screen..
And I will do the same to ANOTHER video-track and put that on TOP.. I want to CROP it so no scales or such will be messed up..
So, what do I do next?

EDIT: I know how to CROP the thing, I forgot to mention it this time.. it’s the MOVING -part afterwards and the MASKING -thing I need some help with..

No problem but the explanation is beyond a forum post so I’ve created a tutorial for you and placed it on my web site. Here is a link to the new tutorial: Creating a Split Screen using A Mask. Please let me know if any part of it is unclear to you and I’ll try to explain it better. Chances are if you didn’t understand it, someone else might not either.

Thanks Terry. I’m glad you were able to follow it. I’m a visual learner so I like pictures with circles and arrows myself. 😉 I just threw it together this afternoon in between doing other thing so I wasn’t sure if it was the right level of detail. Hopefully it will be help to others.

I stayed up all night yesterday and I did manage to complete the video! I didn’t use the tutorial though, because I was finished before it was published.. but, I WILL be making another video in the future, so I will use it then! Thanks a lot!! It was really fun to make a video! And Sony Vegas is a very good program (for beginners as well!).
