Yes this is the best way to do this in Vegas. The Mask tool that you are using has a Feather Type property. Just set it to something other than None. To match the skin tones use the Color Corrector FX on the new face you are adding.

Are you sure you are using the HDV capture tool and not the DV Capture tool? (there are two and you must be using the correct one) Prefs is the left-most button on the tool.

Hmmm… the YouTube video is pretty much step by step. How far did you get? What didn’t you understand? What is it doing that you don’t want it to do?
You just drop them on a track, set the alpha channel, and create a text event on the track above to overlay it.

You need to turn on scene detection. The way you do it is different depending on whether you are capturing DV or HDV:
For DV it’s Options | Preferences | Capture | Enable DV scene detection.
For HDV it’s Prefs | General | Enable HDV scene detection.

It is hard to tell what you are trying to so. You mentioned editing music but then to talk about cutting frames. Music doesn’t have frames video does. So I’m not sure what you are trying to accomplish.
The ‘S’ key will allow you to split an event into two events. Click on the event on the timeline at the point you want to cut and press ‘S’. Then move to the end point you want to cut and press ‘S’. Then selected the event in between that you just split apart and press the Del key to delete it. If this is not what you want to do, please explain in greater detail what you are trying to accomplish.

It sounds like you just need to split the clips with the ‘S‘ key and delete the parts you don’t want.

Those were really good questions and the answer isn’t that simple. I use to think that all modern CPU’s have been 64-bit enabled for quite some time and not too long ago I went to install the 64-bit version of Linux on my brand new IBM Z60m laptop only to find that it doesn’t have a 64-bit CPU. 🙁 I had to install the 32- bit version instead.
So the answer to (A) is to check the specs on your CPU. Go to the manufacturer’s web site (Intel or AMD) and see if it is listed as 64-bit enabled. The answer to (B) & (C) as Jeremy pointed, out is NO. Vegas Pro 8.1 will only run on a 64-bit operating system like Vista64 or XP64. As for (D) I’m 100% with Jeremy and I couldn’t improve on his answer if I tried. 😉

The reason I asked about the software is because most hard disk recorders and memory recorders use the FAT32 file system which limits your filesize to 4GB and causes a single recording to be broken up into several files. The software stitches these back together into one large file so that what you recorded is what you get. I was thinking that maybe this stitching would causes a re-write and thus fix any problem with the file. You might want to search the Sony site and see if there is any software you can download for your camera. Just something to try.
Of course, this may also be why the camera was being sold used on eBay. Maybe it has issues? With tape, we always record black leader and color bars at the beginning. Perhaps you should create a short black clip as the first recording so that you don’t care if the first file is always bad because it won’t be anything important. The fact that it’s always the first clip leads be to believe it might be a camera issue with writing the first clip. Still very strange. You should not be having this problem.
If you can upload a small bad clip somewhere we can download it and test it on our systems for you.

Did you shoot and edit in widescreen 16:9? If so use the widescreen template. Did you shoot and edit in 24p? If so use the pulldown template. Otheriwse if you just want to make regular 4:3 DV select the NTSC DV template alone.
