.mp4 video clip only plays audio
Alright, so I’m using Sony Vegas Pro 8b. I imported my .mp4 videos into Vegas and when I try to preview them or put them on the timeline they only play the sound/audio part of the clip and it doesn’t show video at all. I know for a fact that these clips have both video and audio because they play fine in Quicktime.

I downloaded XviD and it didn’t fix my problem. Do I have to configure XviD in some way to get it to show the video part of my .mp4 files? And I also updated Quicktime like you said…

Vegas cannot edit any file just because you have the codec for playback. There are certain video formats, particularly some DivX formats, it simply won’t edit. If this is the case you’ll need to convert your video into a format that Vegas can edit.
First you need to know what code is being used. There is a handy utility called GSpot that will tell you which video and audio codecs are used by a file but more importantly, it will tell you if you have these installed. Once you know what video codec the file is using you can do one of two things. If the codec is not installed you can install it and see if Vegas can open the file. If that doesn’t work then you need to use some other utility like VirtualDub or SUPER to re-encode it into a format that Vegas can handle.

I have had this problem when adding .MT2S files (AVCHD format). The weird part is that it happens with about every 10th file. The other nine show both the video and audio track.
Also, it’s happened on two different machines (one XP, one Vista). These files are coming from a Canon HG10 camera.

When opening files with vegas 8.0, the first file always reads only audio, although it has the video…All the rest of the files are just fine.
Example: I film a 45 minute speech.
My Sony HDR-SR1, saves it like 4 files .MTS files (about 2GB each), when I open them with the Sony Vegas, the first one is only recognizing audio…what can i do?

Is it always the first file you drop or is it just one particular file that won’t show video? Can you see the video if you play this file outside of Vegas? Perhaps the file is corrupt? Does the Sony HDR-SR1 come with software to transfer the files to the PC and if so, are you using it? Maybe you should try transferring the file again.

Well, so far I have transfered 4 different speeches and all of them have the same problem, the first file only audio.
Anyway I bought my Sony HDR-SR1 used on ebay and did not come with CD installation, but when you plug it in computer it recognizes camera as another drive and you can transfer any file inside the camera.
Concerning other programs, well, we are talking about .MTS files, Xilisoft recognizes them with no problem, thanks.“Verba volant, scripta manent”…
