    Hi All,
Sorry for the ignorance I’m about to display, but…
    a) How do I know if I have a 64 bit enabled computer?
    b) If I don’t, should I upgrade to V-1…ie: Can I upgrade Vegas 8 to V-1 and still use it?
    c) Are all OSs born equal? (Does XP (Home edition) and/or Vista (Home edition) support 64 bit processing? If not what does?
    d) What is the meaning of life?
    Cheers,

    a) How do I know if I have a 64 bit enabled computer?
You would have bought a 64 bit operating system with a 64 bit cpu (You can send off for a 64 bit version of Vista)

    b) If I don’t, should I upgrade to V-1…ie: Can I upgrade Vegas 8 to V-1 and still use it? If you do not have a 64 bit OS & cpu with appropriate drivers, then it would not be in your best interest to install anything 64 bit.

    c) Are all OSs born equal? (Does XP (Home edition) and/or Vista (Home edition) support 64 bit processing? If not what does? See the link above

    d) What is the meaning of life? Seriously? To know and enjoy our God forever.

Those were really good questions and the answer isn’t that simple. I use to think that all modern CPU’s have been 64-bit enabled for quite some time and not too long ago I went to install the 64-bit version of Linux on my brand new IBM Z60m laptop only to find that it doesn’t have a 64-bit CPU. 🙁 I had to install the 32- bit version instead.

So the answer to (A) is to check the specs on your CPU. Go to the manufacturer’s web site (Intel or AMD) and see if it is listed as 64-bit enabled. The answer to (B) & (C) as Jeremy pointed, out is NO. Vegas Pro 8.1 will only run on a 64-bit operating system like Vista64 or XP64. As for (D) I’m 100% with Jeremy and I couldn’t improve on his answer if I tried. 😉

Thanks so much John. As usual, you guys have come through with Greatly Enlightening info. Also very good to know as I will soon be investing in a new laptop specifically for location work and will be looking for just those requirements.
