You need to get rid of the parenthesis in the file names. The files must end with just a number to be recognized as a sequence (e.g., “shot0002 01.tga”, “shot0002 02.tga”, “shot0002 03.tga”, etc. ). Yours end with ‘).tga’
Use any batch rename program to fix this. I can highly recommend Bulk Rename Utility. I use it all the time.

There are two safe zones. One is the Action Safe Zone and the other is the Title Safe Zone which is actually smaller (inside the other). Yes, you want to keep your titles within the title safe zone and action within the action safe zone.
The point I was making was in response to resizing media so that it ONLY fills the action safe zone. This is almost always a bad idea unless you want to have a black border around your picture on some TV sets and almost all LCD’s.

How are you importing the media? Are you using File | Import | DVD Camcorder Disc? This is the only way it will work. Just dropping the file onto the timeline will probably not work because the audio is in AC3 format and Sony has a problem importing AC3 unless you go through the import dvd camcorder disc and only add the files to the timeline from the Project Media pool.

I agree the WMV looks nice and smooth. The default deinterlace option in Vegas is Blend Fields which is good for low motion. You might want to change that in your project properties to Interpolate Fields which is better for high motion and see if it gives you a better results.

Vegas can’t edit Xvid at all and doesn’t do well with DivX either. It’s best to stay away from both of those formats for editing.
Actually, there is no need to use VDub at all (unless you are using it to do other signal processing). If the images are numbered in sequential order (e.g., image001.tga, image002.tga, image003.tga, etc.) just open them in Vegas as an image sequence and Vegas will treat them like video.
Use File | Import | Media… Select the first image and check the box at the bottom of the windows that says [X] Open still image sequence. Vegas will create an event that you can edit like a movie.

You should understand that the “Safe Zone” is from an era of cathode ray tubes where TV sets had an area around the tube which may be covered by the cabinet it is placed in. It is an aproximate guideline and not very exact as all CRT TV’s will differ in how large this zone is. This is actually an Action Safe Zone and you would make sure that all of the critical action in your movie stay within this area.
All modern LCD, Plasma, SD and HD TV’s no longer have a safe zone and can display images right to the edge. Personally, I would not resize images to be within the safe zone unless there is critical information right at the edge of the picture that must be seen and you know the montage will be viewed on older CRT TV’s. Note that anyone viewing your video on a modern TV will see a black border around the entire frame. This may or may not be what you want.

You can animate the mask by adding keyframes. You can soften the edges by using the feather type in the mask tool.

No, sorry you misinterpreted my post. The MainConcept encoder is built into Sony Vegas Pro 8. This is done from within Vegas:
- Select File | Render As…
- Change the Save as type to MainConcept AVC/AAC (*.mp4)
- Select the Template: Apple iPod 640×480 Video
- Press Save
