Mark, you are correct that you would be better off with a 2.4 Quad than a 2.6 Dual. Vegas will take advantage of all 4 cores while rendering and you would see a dramatic improvement (almost 50% better) with the QuadCore.

I would set the project temporarily to progressive mode and then take the snapshot and set it back to interlaced. This will remove the interlacing while the snapshot is being taken. You can also deinterlace an already captured image with Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro or just about any image editor that understands video frame interlacing.

You want something that is going to work day-in and day-out so I would not buy too cheap. Any of the inexpensive HDD recorders like the Sony DCR-SR45 30GB camcorder should be fine. Depending on how they want to archive footage they might even want a DVD camcorder like the Sony DCR-DVD610. If you do get a Sony HDD handycam you can still pair it with a Sony VRD-MC5 DVDirect DVD Recorder and instantly archive footage to DVD so you can have both AVI and DVD’s if you need them. I agree with you to avoid tape. Either HDD or DVD SD camcorders should fit nicely into their workflow.

These templates are not for your use and are only for the Mercalli to do motion tracking. If you look at the video format it says, “proDAD Saver for Mercalli” so this is a special codec used by Mercalli only. You should not be using them for your video rendering.

I believe you have hit a limit to nested projects. They don’t support 5.1 surround.

Yup. Just change the project properties to DVD and prepare and burn again. This will take a long time because it will have to re-render the HD M2V file to DVD quality MPEG2 but it works (I’ve done it).

John, I don’t have one of these units but 95 minutes is a long time for AVCHD on a DVD. I just got my Sony HDR-CX12 yesterday and I was shocked to find that the default setting was set to 9MB bit rate! What were they thinking? The camera is capable of 16MB and they set it to 9MB by default? (probably because they only give you a skimpy 4GB memory card and they wanted it to look like you had more record time) It also has the capability to record at 6MB!!! So when Sony says you can fit “up to” 95 minutes, I’m guessing that this is only possible if you record AVCHD at 6MB and not at the full 16MB, which is probably what you would want to be shooting at. This is just a guess but the numbers make sense and would fit 95 minutes of AVCHD on DVD media.

The flicker filter in DVD Architect is just for menus not for video. Do the mpeg2 videos flicker when you play them back on your PC or just after you make a DVD? It’s very strange that DVD Architect would make a properly rendered mpeg2 look any different since it should just transfer the file without any re-rendering.

No, but you can use Save As and change the filename to include a date.

Yes, that would work fine as long as neither of you added more media. If you did you would obviously have to send the additional media as well.

That would work too. You just have to be diligent about getting the latest copy before you start, refreshing the latest copy when you’re done, and most importantly coordinating who is working on it at any one time! Maybe always ftp it with the date in the name so it will be obvious if the date has changed since you last got it.
