Brian is correct about codecs. CODEC stands for “enCOder/DECoder” and are used to encode video when rendering as well as decoding video when playing. The size of a file is determined by the efficiency of the compression that the codec uses along with the bitrate that it’s being asked to compress. More efficient codecs can encode higher bitrates (and thus higher quality) with the same size as less efficient codecs. So Stephen is right about bitrate being a big part of the equation but codecs play a part too.

Brian is also correct that the only way to limit the size of a rendered file is by using a calculator and doing tests with different codecs using different bitrates unless you have a program that does this for you.

The original poster (Bryan) said he has Sony Vegas Movie Pro 8.0 which does NOT exist so I assume he has Move Studio 8 which is why there is no Custom button in the render dialog. You will need some other program to encode your videos if you need to use custom templates or purchase Vegas Pro 8. Movie Studio does not allow you to customize rendering templates.

    > Also, as a side note, is Vegas 9 considered better or worse than 8.0? Seems like a lot of people like 8.0.

See this thread: Vegas Pro 9.0? for a detailed explanation of why the version number are meaningless when you don’t realize that there are two completely different products. Movie Studio is NOT Vegas Pro so the numbers don’t matter.

Try: Options | Preferences… | Editing then change New still image length (seconds): to be whatever you want the new default to be. Then import your images.

  • > So when one slows down a clip (expands it while holding ctrl) it’s already composing frames to insert at render time? Is there a menu somewhere we can access to control this, crank it up a bit?

Right-click on the event and select Properties. On the Video Event tab you can select from Smart Resample, Force Resample, & Disable Resample.

There is also Video Supersampling which will smooth out the way that Vegas calculates the intermediate frames. To access this you first must expose the Master Video Bus track (Ctrl+Shift+B). Then right-click and choose Insert/Remove Envelope | Video Supersampling. This will insert a supersampling envelope. You can raise that envelope to increase the rate of supersampling which determines how accurate Vegas is when it creates the blended frames. This is how you crank it up a bit!

  • Vegas does this automatically with no intervention from you. By default it will resample media that does not match the project frame rate and create the in-between frames. No need to switch to Adobe for this. In fact, Adobe could learn a few things from Sony about letting the computer do what it does best and not requiring video editors to be rocket scientists and worry about these things. 😉

Vegas will only do this if the frame rate of the animation does not match the frame rate of the project. Otherwise it has no choice but to make up the missing frames. You can right-click on the event, choose Properties, and select Disable resample. This will stop Vegas from blending the in-between frames but it will have to fill the missing frames with duplicates so you will still get extra frames unless your animation frame rate matches.

What version of Vegas do you have? It sounds like you make have used Pan / Crop on the event instead of Track Motion on the track.

Yup, it’s not only possible but it’s rather easy once you know how. Place the video of the computer on a bottom track and the picture you want to insert on the track above. Click the Track Motion button in the header of the track with the picture and resize and reposition it to cover just the computer screen.

If the computer screen is on an angle and you need to angle your picture, change the Track Motion from Source Alpha to 3D Source Alpha. You will then have the ability to spin the picture in the X, Y, and Z direction (up, down, left, right, forward, back).

If you really want to “draw” on your video in Vegas you will need a plug-in like Boris FX or Boris RED. Vegas alone does not have the capability.

You can do some simple things with Generated Media and Masks but it’s not the same as being able to actually paint on the video.

    Try this:

    1. Select View | Edit Details
    2. From the Show: dropdown select Markers
    3. Click the left upper most corner to highlight the entire grid
    4. Type Ctrl-X Ctrl-V

That’s it. This will cut and paste all of the markers in your project in order again.
