While Boris Continuum Complete will not give you 3D Containers and Cameras to do sophisticated motion graphics like RED will, it does give you a lot of capability.

Yes it can. It wouldn’t be much of a replacement if it couldn’t read and write PSD files. 😉 I’ve opened some pretty complex PSD files with it like 3D Box Shots with lots of layers grouped within layers and it actually opens them faster than Photoshop does. It also writes PSD files.
This app is deigned to compete with Photoshop so it’s very good at reading and writing the PSD format.

I assume you mean Boris RED and Boris RED can actually run most After Effects plug-ins so it’s not only very similar in function but you can use most of the same plug-ins for both. I don’t know if AE ever got real 3D Text but Boris RED has 3D text as well. RED is basically Boris FX + Boris Graffiti + some extras plug-ins all in one. I would download a trial if you want to try it out.

No. Unlike Windows where Microsoft believes that “one size fits all”, Apple understands that the interactions with a tablet are very different than the interactions with a desktop so there are different operating systems for the two. Macs run OS X and iPads run iOS. What you want is something like PIXELMATOR for iOS. Now the best thing about this is that it’s compatible with Pixelmator for Mac but you don’t own a Mac. (of course that is easily fixed by buying a Mac… lol) but Pixelmator for iOS is a really nice full-featured graphics app for the iPad. Before Affinity Photo came out, Pixelmator was my Photoshop substitute. It’s another great program for the Mac and iOS.

While I like PaintShop Pro and used it for many years, it was never a replacement for the power of Photoshop. Affinity Photo is a replacement for Photoshop. Much more in depth than PaintShop Pro. You may never need these deeper features and PaintShop Pro may be all you ever need. But Affinity Photo is competing head-to-head with Photoshop for it’s user base.

It was very easy to pick up. It’s different but in a good way. Very easy to use yet very powerful. You still have layers and masks and all the stuff you expect.

Have you ever vacuumed out all of the dust? It may be overheating due to dust collecting on the fins of the CPU cooler and just needs to be cleaned out. You should have this done by a professional if you don’t feel comfortable disassembling your Mac Pro yourself, but dust will cause computers to overheat and reboot. It could also reboot due to a bad memory stick but if the fan was running loud, it sounds like it might be a cooling issue.

No. It looks like your Mac Pro is a 2.8Ghz 8-Core (2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) and the one at work is only a a single 2.66Ghz 4-Core (2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) so it is NOT faster than your Mac. In fact, it’s about 2/3rd the speed of your Mac which is significant! It has 1/2 the cores and they are slightly slower than yours but they are multi-threaded while yours are not. Overall it’s slower.
If you check the Geekbench scores, your Mac Pro (Early 2008) Intel Xeon E5462 2800 MHz (8 cores) has a score of 10,411 while the Mac Pro (Early 2009) Intel Xeon W3520 2670 MHz (4 cores) has a Geekbench score of only 7,172. That’s a pretty big difference. So the Mac at work is not faster than yours.
BTW, I bought a 2008 Mac Pro 2,8Ghz 8-Core, 16GB memory, AMD Radeon HD 5870 on eBay about 2 years ago for $740. They are even cheaper now. I also purchased my current 2010 Mac Pro 2.93Ghz 12-Core, 24GB memory, AMD Radeon HD 5870 about a year ago on eBay for $2275. So you can probably pick something up on eBay that fits your needs. When the new Mac Pro’s came out, lots of companies updated their inventory so there are a lot on the market right now.
