Thank you both for your input. I’m going so spend some time today to test some short clips testing/adjusting as you commented.

Graham, got the impression from your comment there may be better ways to get my BluRay track into Vegas than handbrake. My intent is to have as little quality loss as possible getting the VC-1 based BluRay file into Vegas for editing. I’m not a fan of mp4 for this but looking at mpeg2 tools today seem to have faded a bit and can’t get a good read on them. Figured mpeg2 was older technology but may still be the right choice here. Input is appreciated.

    Note my conversion is:

    BluRay unencrypted
To mp4 with handbrake high profile
Into Vegas as 8 bit pixel format instead of 32 as neat video plugin not meant for 32-bit
Render in Vegas with Video for Windows (.avi) -> HD 1080-24p (YUV) template and select uncompressed for codex
Then use microsoft expressions to convert to WMV.

Somewhere between the mp4 creation and output from Vegas video looses some black levels.

Can this have to do with the aspect ratio of the film? Difference between the original source and the cut version on output? So the input is 1920×1080 (1.777) and the output is 1920×800 (2.4)? I know when you load it in Vegas and select the video initially as the source format, it picks 1.2121 for the aspect ratio but they don’t physically list the standard ones i’m used to.

    Thanks.

Well it’s a wait and see game right now, however I set the video to 1920×800. Then cropped the 1080 down to 800. Picture filled the available space. I then rendered at 1920×800 and as it renders the preview window is now showing the black bars as it renders. Project and preview window still say 1920×800. I’m going to assume if the preview window is still showing the black bars they will be there in the final.

Thanks for the info. I’ll give it a try. Question. So when I set my project to 1920×800, import my mp4, then drag it to the timeline it asks if I want to set the project video settings to match the media. Assume the answer is NO?

    Thanks.

Video was M2TS. Extracted the H264 file and put it into an MP4 container with Yamb. For reference video is 25.4Mbps, 1920×1080 (bars), 23.976fps.

    Thanks.

Figured it out but now another question. Assuming what I did was right. When I set the pixel aspect ratio to .9091 it rendered without black bars on the left and right sides. Sooooo, how do I now if I should change the pixel aspect ratio and to what since it looks like Vegas doesn’t detact that.

    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. not sure by the name “Hold” if it will do what I’m looking. Say I have the start keyframe and then the next one 20 minutes into the video. Then the next one 40 minutes into the video. Now I have a filter that removes red from the picture by a certain percent. For the first keyframe group I set the red removal to 100%. I expect until it hits the next keyframe to remove 100% of the red. Not build up to it between keyframes. Then I want between 20 minutes and 40 minutes to set the plugin to 50% red removal. I want it to remove it immediately and not build to 50% removal. Is this what “Hold” would do?

    Thanks.
