You could also buy the AJA Io, which happily works alongside the Kona for analog capture/output.
A bit more expensive than the converters, but more tidy and flexible. You could also pick up a used one on eBay or something.

Autosave does not write over the same project, eliminating your changes.
Look in the Autosave vault….you will see the project with a date and time appendage to its name.

[Chris Babbitt] “What size and bit-rate are the TV shows and movies that you download from iTunes?

I checked a few of them on my computer, and they seem to be slightly above what is possible in Compressor….1500 is the max in Compressor. The ones I looked at were 1564 and 1580.

I am pretty sure Apple is using a hardware encoder for their iTunes Store material.

Compressor can do both sizes. Just change the radio button in the Encoder pane of the Inspector. Then save as a custom preset for future use. Crank the bit rate up to the max of 1500kbs if you want really nice picture quality.

The 320 size looks fine on an iPod screen, but if you hook the iPod or the computer up to a monitor its pretty gnarly looking.

[Peterd] “This doesn’t eliminate the possiblity of codec or QT incompatitiblites though.”

He has a Kona, which can pretty much work with everything, including material digitized from other capture cards. Though you are right, it cant be ruled out.

Get your friend to export an XML of his project…you should be able to import that.

If you send to Soundtrack as a multitrack project you get the levels and fades.

Use the same preset as NTSC or PAL DV. Same frame/pixel size.

You didnt say whether you were PAL or NTSC…and you did not state whether you were 4:3 or 16:9….but if you look at the presets in Photosohop CS2, its all pretty self explanatory.

  • [Chris Poisson] “Why not just put the HD stuff in the SD timeline, let FCP scale it and fix the aspect ratios in the distort tab? Frame rates can be dealt with using Nattress Standards filters, so what am I missing here?”

Why bother with all that rendering (not to mention the purchase of filters), when all he has to do is batch convert them in Compressor? Much easier to actually do real editing if everything is the same codec… I suppose if he is just putting in clips and not mucking around with them much, its pretty much a wash, though. Your way will work too.

  • Downconvert your HD stuff to SD, since your final product will be SD anyway.
Your HD stuff will look good and your SD stuff won’t get significantly worse.

Use Compressor to downconvert your HD stuff (or get it done at a dub house), use MPEG Streamclip to extract the DVD footage.

Edit in a 8 or 10 bit Uncompressed SD Timeline, if your drives can handle it.

No sense upconverting the SD, only to downconvert it when you are done..
If you were going to make an HD master, I might feel differently.
