Well…one thing…you are showing screen shots of the Canvas. This is not what you should be judging your quality with…you need an external video monitor for that. You can get a better idea if you set your Canvas to 100% (its 74% in the screenshot)…but its not a substitute for an external monitor.

Second…your Sequence Codec is DVNTSC, which is pretty bad for graphics…though on a broadcast monitor, it probably will look a little better than what you are seeing in the Canvas.

You can use Uncompressed or ProRes as your sequence setting (and your Motion setting)…this will improve things…but if you master back to DV tape you will lose all the benefit, as you will be getting hit with DV compression again.

Actually all tracks on iTunes are now DRM free. You can just convert them to AIFF files directly.

  • The sample rate difference will definitely cause problems. Good that you corrected that.
What codec did you export in, HDV? HDV’s long GOP structure might be causing this type of oddity (not really sure, just guessing). Can you export and edit using ProRes?

  • Check the sample rates of the source footage, your exported footage and the .wav file. Are they all 48k?

Can you take the file you exported, bring it back into FCP and modify its timecode to be correct in the Viewer using the Modify/Timecode command?

Or does FCP read still show the correct timecode and only Compressor gets it wrong?

[Bruce Coxon] “Open the audio in Soundtrack Pro. Apply effect Dynamics>Enveloper and try the Roomkiller preset. You can then adjust the release time and it’s negative gain to taste. If this doesn’t do it for you apply another iteration of the same effect.”

Great tip. I am saving this one. Didn’t work well on a “severe” test clip, but on a moderately echoey test clip it helped a lot.

[Shane Ross] “CBS STILL uses D2?”

Yep. Had to deliver a prime time show to them early this year on it.

Yep. Just load analog. The optional board is just an a/d converter.

Believe it or not, CBS still wants prime time shows delivered in this format. We just output to digibeta and dubbed it for them.

    You probably need to reshoot.
Echo really isn’t very fixable in any program. You can mess with the EQ’s to try to minimize it, but it will never sound right.

  • [pedro casais] “f I export with 640×480 sd video frame size and then I convert this qt.mp4 file into a file that works well with fcp, could I choose a video monitor size dimension such as 1080i without making the picture look stretch?”

No. This would correspond to 4:3 SD video frame size. 1080i is 16:9 and way larger (HD). You can upconvert, either pillarboxing or cropping the top and bottom, but the result will likely look horrible, given the low resolution of the original file.

If you are NOT going to output to DV tape, you should work in an SD Uncompressed 8 bit timeline for the best quality. Convert the mp4 to Uncompressed SD 8 bit in Compressor. You can use this file to then encode to MPEG2 for DVD and also to edit with in FCP.

You could also use Apple ProRes, if your drives are not up to the demands of Uncompressed. Keep to the standard frame size of 720 x 486 in SD-NTSC.
