    I’m trying to figure out what this two resolution numbers mean in relation to each other. Do they both describe the ratio of the viewing area of your video or there’s a different between them?

    I came up with this question because I’m exporting a quick time file and one of the resolution options is 680×420 and I want to know if I choose that one, will the video viewing ratio be stretch to 720×480 when you play it on a ntsc monitor?

    The follow up question to the one above is this one:

    I am trying to figure out how to convert a 1 hour photo slide show that I exported as a quick time MP4 (680×420) which was the only option I had in iphoto, to a quick time compression that FCP likes, keeping the best quality but without making the file super big. is H.264 an ideal compression for FCP?

    h264 would be a bad choice, as it is not an editing codec.

    What are you going to output to when you are finished editing? This will determine the answer of what codec to edit in.

    As for the dimensions.. If you mean 640×480….this is the SD video frame size when viewed with square pixels on a computer display…720×486 is the dimensions for a video monitor, which displays using D1 rectangular pixels.

    Thanks John, yes I meant 640×480, so please correct me if I’m wrong. If I export with 640×480 sd video frame size and then I convert this qt.mp4 file into a file that works well with fcp, could I choose a video monitor size dimension such as 1080i without making the picture look stretch? Or is this video frame size lock to a specific video monitor size dimension?

    The final viewing purpose of this project is a mixture of options. I’m doing a family video with all the photos. First, I like to play them in a big LCD monitor for everyone to enjoy and then I’ll be making a few dvd copies and upload a version to the web page. So, right now I’m just looking to re-compress this qt.mp4 that I get from iphoto (only option for this slide show of photos) and make it FCP friendly (without sacrificing the quality or taking too much time) so I can edit some music, vo and titles.

    No. This would correspond to 4:3 SD video frame size. 1080i is 16:9 and way larger (HD). You can upconvert, either pillarboxing or cropping the top and bottom, but the result will likely look horrible, given the low resolution of the original file.

    If you are NOT going to output to DV tape, you should work in an SD Uncompressed 8 bit timeline for the best quality. Convert the mp4 to Uncompressed SD 8 bit in Compressor. You can use this file to then encode to MPEG2 for DVD and also to edit with in FCP.

    You could also use Apple ProRes, if your drives are not up to the demands of Uncompressed. Keep to the standard frame size of 720 x 486 in SD-NTSC.
