I believe you no longer need Final Cut Studio.
You should be able to purchase Compressor 4 from the Mac App store for $50 and get the ProRes encoder with that.
You should then be able to export Quicktime Movies from Avid using the Apple ProRes codecs.
Or you can wait a week for MC 6, which has it built in.

There is no setup. No settings to fiddle with. Just edit.
Just open the bin containing PAL footage in your NTSC project. When you cut it into an NTSC timeline, Avid takes care of the rest using what it calls Motion Adapters.
This is an FCP forum so we should not delve too deeply into Avid tech support here.

Avid offers a 30 day free trial that’s fully functional. You can download it and test it with your footage.

It’s very simple. Import your footage into bins in a PAL project, then create an NTSC project. Open the bins you made in the PAL project in the NTSC project and edit.
It’s really that simple. The realtime conversion is quite good for general footage, but you have the option of other modes that require rendering, if you need to improve the conversion quality.

If the footage is of decent quality, Avid MC 5.5 can convert on the fly.
In fact I am doing it right now.

You have to download the plugin yourself. AMA plugins are not included in the MC install. Just go to the Avid website and download it

As a test, try transcoding to ProResHQ and see if your situation changes. Use a rewritable disc, if possible.

You may be causing a levels freak out indirectly by using ProRes 4444 which can get confused as to whether you are working with RGB or YUV material under some circumstances.
Are you sure you need ProRes 4444? Unless you are working with very high end source material, probably not.
Try with HQ or plain old 422.

The Lightworks feature list is quite extensive, BUT…much of that is not stable or even functional, as of the last time I tried the Beta…which, admittedly was months ago. I don’t think very many people used to using Avid MC would enjoy working with the Lightworks open source beta.
Keep in mind, the open source beta and the Lightworks that was used to edit all those wonderful films you have heard of is not the same thing.
