No audio nesting.
You can make a stereo pair appear as a single track, though.

Reason #110 why not to do a full blown edit with AMA footage.
AMA is great for previewing and organizing, but to edit anything other than something short and quick…is not a good idea.

No. They are the same player, with some capabilities unlock (exporting, and a few other bells and whistles). Unless you are talking about Quicktime X, which is definitely not as capable, and has a number of quirks and anomalies.

Avid comes with Sorenson Squeeze, which is like Compressor. Just use that.

You don’t want to do the Boris route for anything more than the odd shot or two.
Avid isn’t the right tool for this job. Take a look at Premiere or FCP.

Your Avid MC purchase probably included Sorenson Squeeze. Send your sequence to it and try one of the H264 presets there. You should be able to get it compressed more efficiently , and with better quality than a direct Avid export.
MKV is actually a container (just like QuickTime). In many cases, the file compression is H264 as well. Though it is actually pretty cool, I think the general public is fairly clueless about it and it will end up causing you grief if you use it.

Nothing with FCP7.
Would help with Premiere Pro, which makes use of CUDA processing for realtime fx and playback.
