    I’ve actually have attempted this effect before.

    Trapcode’s particular will do the job. I used a stand alone app. called Particle illusion. It’s great for non realistic motion graohics, and does a decent job with realistic smoke. Though it is not 3D, it does a decent job faking it by allowing you to scale the particles, making them look as if they are receding from the camera.

    On their website, you can watch their demo reel and see what I mean. It’s a couple hundred bucks.

    Okay, great! I just tested it and it looks awesome.

    One last question:

    Right now, the layers are influenced in all three dimensions. Is there a way to restrict the movement of the layers to just the X and Y axis?

    Do I apply this expression the position property of each layer to be influenced by the camera?
