You have to use a particle engine that supports the right physics.

Particular from Trapcode specifically supports wind but it is a 3rd party (extra $) plug-in.

I am curious if anyone has successfully used AE’s built-in “Particle Playground.” I found it so miserably slow that I couldn’t even explore its capabilities.

    Particular is FAST.

Anyway…spend some time in this category of plug ins: SIMULATION.

There should be a “sand” tutorial on the COW using Shatter in AE.

I’ve actually have attempted this effect before.

Trapcode’s particular will do the job. I used a stand alone app. called Particle illusion. It’s great for non realistic motion graohics, and does a decent job with realistic smoke. Though it is not 3D, it does a decent job faking it by allowing you to scale the particles, making them look as if they are receding from the camera.

On their website, you can watch their demo reel and see what I mean. It’s a couple hundred bucks.
