About PCIe slots… It appears that I misunderstood your question, and as a result, you misunderstood my answer.

You have two types of PCIe slots in your computer. Two 16x slots and two 1x slots.

I’d suggest you test the speed of your drives, see which one is faster, and edit on that one. If they’re the same, use the external one, since editing on the same drive your system’s running on will always be a little slow because the system’s trying to use that disk too.

AJA’s system test utility will tell you what you need to know: https://www.aja.com/ajashare/systemtest.zip

All your slots are full huh? What else have you got in your computer?

Well, I’d try the card you have first. That article seems to think it will work. I suggested upgrading because I thought that a card two generations older then the oldest card it’s designed to work with would be problematic.

If it works, then stick with it! If not, get the best 500 series card you can sensibly afford.

by the way, PCI16x, PCIex, that’s just different people writing the same thing different ways. It’s all PCIe.

PCI-X is totally different and was never used for graphics cards, (and hasn’t really been used in 5 years.)

While we’re talking about upgrades, What about the one remaining limb on the tree? What storage are you using?

[Sohrab Sandhu] “You say -5 frames and boom there it is. WOW!”

Yeah, but in the time it would take me to say that I’d already have done it with my mouse.

“select clip 00024B. Move negative 5 frames.”

It takes me 4 seconds to say all that. I can do it with my mouse in 2 seconds max.

For complex operations where menus and popup windows are required I can see voice activation being a great improvement. But for simple editing tasks, the mouse (and pen tablet) rains supreme.

I would love to be able to say “render the entire sequence a 20Mbs H.264 file in the project folder”… that would be much faster then any interface could be. (Unless it was ridiculously simplified)

He’s Using CS4 so more RAM isn’t going to help. It can only use 4GB anyway.

If you have 64bit Vista, do yourself a favor and get CS5.5. It will let you actually use the RAM you just bought.

Also, if you get CS5.5, getting a supported CUDA card to replace your GTX 9800 will help a lot too.

Do all your low rez files have the same file names as the originals? They don’t have to be the same format, just the same file name.

If so, it’s rather easy to replace everything.

Fist use the project manager to make a new project with just the final sequence and the video files required. You don’t have to copy the media, just make a new project file.

Open this new slimed down project.

Select all your footage in the project panel, and right click Make Offline. Don’t delete the files, just make them off line.

Then right click all the files again and select “link media….” and select the high-rez file will the name matching the file it’s asking you for. (it’ll say “where is xxxxxx”)

    Done!

you can also do this with the “replace media” command, but you have to do it one file at a time. My way you can do all the files at once.

Does the flickering cary over when you render? or is it only during playback on the timeline?

  • not sure exactly what you want to do, but it sounds like “match frame” which is M on windows and probably is the same on Mac.

Right. I should have made that clearer.
    Thanks.

    An even faster solution.

import the clips, and then select all of them and right click, Modify > Audio Channels.

Select “Mono” or “Mono as Stereo”, and then uncheck the check mark by the second audio track. This way you will never even have to delete the empty audio track when you add the clips to the timeline cause it will be disabled.
