I don’t know their pricing structure but I found a press release from Jan 2007 that listed one of 2DegreeFrost’s 11.25Tb drive systems for under $15K.

That was last year and that was without cards, but it’s one of the better prices I’ve seen for this stuff. I am about to base our post workflow on ONE of these systems (Editshare, Facilis, 2DegreeFrost, Apace, etc….) and now really wish I’d been at NAB.

If only I could edit with each one for a while and test for any quirks…. Has there ever been a “SAN shootout” challenge?

I am looking to buy a vStor from Apace also. What had been your experience with them – does digitizing slow down your system/stutter on dropped frames? Do you have a sealed closet door or is it just that noisy from outside your closet? Is it the fans or the drives? Sorry to be so obvious, but noise could be a problem for us also and as you know it’s a big decision.

We’re also looking at Terrablock 8X but wondering if its stream count will be enough….

Yes, we are upgrading to MC Nitris DX. Our MC Adrenaline was upgraded to 2.7 without upgrading the computer and it worked well for a while. But now that I’ve started adding a lot of graphics layers, it is inadequate (though still fine for editing).

So we are staying with Avid but adding FCS also. With Automatic Duck, we will be able to match the machine to the needs of the project.

  • Yes,
I’ve done that now. Unfortunately neither that nor the multiple reboots have solved my problem. Could someone tell me what the setting is that is blocking the port? I have not found one that I can set to “no port” yet. Express may have been feature-crippled but it always worked on firewire.

I’m sure this doesn’t help but I’m having that problem on Media Composer 2.8 also. Plus now I’m having problems with Digital Cut.

I thought it was because I upgraded to Media Composer but if you have it,maybe it’s the x.8 upgrade? I can’t downgrade to Xpress again so I’m kinda screwed with my coming deadlines. But I feel your pain….

  • Unfortunately I’ve already done that and it hasn’t helped. Any other thoughts or suggestions?

The price point of 35k and under includes Facilis Terrablock and they have a solution even in the under 25K ballpark. They answer the phone immediately and always are quick to work out any questions/problems. They work more through VARs now but still are quick and informative.

Don’t discount the obvious solutions. Terrablocks are really inexpensive if you use the already included connections(4?) and don’t need an external switch.

  • Doug,
at the time I left we had two Terrablocks and captured from up to six machines at once. Even with one we could get four at a time – all capturing into separate virtual drives. We didn’t run uncompressed but we always had editors editing while others were digitizing.

Call Facilis and have them calculate how many streams you’ll get – they’ll give you the straight facts on its capacities.
