I did a test for you this weekend while setting up for a gig.

I planned to use an sdi monitor. So I set up the camera connecting the sdi output to the cable to the monitor. It worked fine.

Then I went to the camera menu and selected hdmi for output, while leaving the sdi monitor connected. The display went dark.

Then I turned the camera menu back to sdi from hdmi, and the sdi monitor displayed an image.

My conclusion, is that the sdi does not provide an output when the hdmi is turned on.

In answer to your second question, what to do about it. I would recommend a black magic batter operated sdi to hdmi convertor. I have used it successfully in the past. It has sdi in and hdmi out. Plus an sdi loop out, so you can have both outputs.

Well, to tell you the truth, the manual may be right.
I have not actually tried both at the same time. I just always switch the output and didn’t have a need to test both at the same time.

    Go ahead and test it.

No they are not. When you go in the output menu, you select one or the other.

Assuming that you have a backup of the information on the internal memory, try reformatting it.

If that doesn’t work, I would call Sony tech support.

I have NX5u cameras. I have not seen that particular thing happen.

How did you get it from the camera into the timeline? And what editor are you using.

    Are you missing any clips?

  • It would be helpful if you would let us know which camera you are using, and what your manual says should be happening at this point.

April 21, 2014 at 11:21 pm in reply to: NX5U Rebate

It looks like the rebate link goes to a third party processor. Their server is down.

I would try a couple times a day for the next couple days.

If you want, contact the distributor you bought it from and harrass them to harrass Sony. That might get it fixed a little faster.

April 18, 2014 at 1:24 am in reply to: For those who’ve upgraded…

I downloaded it and it looks like nothing new at all.

Seems like Sony has maybe 1/3 of one software developer assigned to this product.

They added some third party affects as teasers to get me to buy those affects.

They added an app on a tablet which a third party developed to try and show a client which seems anemic compared to what it could have been. Allowing feedback along the timeline and helpful things.

They added a few bug fixes for the codecs for 4 k stuff (like actually being able to read the timecode)

When they delayed the release the way they did, I had my hopes up a little higher. I thought they were porting it to MAC OS. Or coding into the base some of the features we have all been asking for and that two companies are making a living (Vegasaur et al) because Sony Creative doesn’t have anyone assigned to improving this software very much.

As a prior vp of product management, these are signs they are considering this a mature product and they are pulling back investment for some other more promising product.

March 31, 2014 at 4:40 pm in reply to: Do 128 Gig sd cards work in the NX5u

    Glad you asked.

Yes there are two tricks you must know. These are in addition to the instructions provided by Sony.

    1. You must start with an SD card in slot a. It won’t be used, so it can be empty or full, but an error will happen later that is not obviously related.

    2. There is a step that says reset the camera. But doesn’t tell you how. At this point, you push a paperclip into the hole on top of the camera where the control buttons are located.
