It looks to me like a factory lcd test screen.

    I would do the following.
    1. with a paperclip, press the reset button visible on your top photograph.
If that doesn’t get you out of it,

    2. Call Sony tech support and show them the photos.

The nx 1 looks like an nx5 with some feature removed. I have been using nx5 for 6 years and my business depends on 4 of them working every day.

Since you are down to two possibilities, it will be a matter of your taste.

    You have two options.
    1. Rent both over a weekend and do as many tests as you can. Daylight, dimlight, etc.

    2. Buy both from BH and test the them intensely over the weekend and then send one back.

April 29, 2015 at 3:36 pm in reply to: Use 130 chapter markers in Vegas pro 13 -DVDA?

Thank you guys for your encouragement and ideas.

What has worked is I simply cut the video into two shorter videos each with less than 99 chapters.

Then brought each of them into DVD architect. I told the end action of the first video is to go to the beginning of the second.

Then I created scene selections pages for each video with 24 scenes on each page. Then I added a link from the last scene selection to go to the first scene selection of the second video.

It works like a charm if I render it as a Bluray and the client loves it.

However, when I tried to render it as a DVD there is an error message that says only 18 buttons per page are allowed. And that includes the three navigation buttons, so only 15 per page.

I remember doing this once before a long time ago and was able to get more than 15 buttons per page.

Do I have some other setting wrong in DVD architect that is preventing this?

    Thanks

April 22, 2015 at 10:56 pm in reply to: sdi output video delay on fs-700

As long as the audio is still in sync with the video on the monitors, this is a normal and expected consequence of the digitization process that SDI performs.

There is a delay at the sending end as the camera takes all the video data and audio data and mulitplexes, then transmits 1 bit at a time plus error checking and redundancy information.

Then the receiving end has to remove the packet header information, demultiplex the serial signal and send it to the screen raster.

The audio and video monitored and recorded should remain in sync with each other, however.

April 21, 2015 at 1:45 pm in reply to: HXR-NX3. No audio. Period.

    Here is my hypothesis.

It is recorded, but in a different format and you are not opening it. For instance, These cameras can record audio as ac3 or as lpcm. Many codecs assume that if the video is compressed as avc, then the audio has to be ac3. When you play back the file with these codecs, it won’t read the audio.

Perhaps since last time you used it, someone changed the audio recording settings on the camera from ac3 to lpcm.

Bring it into your editing software. Most editing software is smart enough to read the audio even if it is lpcm. If it doesn’t look around for a plug in.

April 6, 2015 at 2:10 pm in reply to: Sony CX730 audio question

    Here are my thoughts.
    1. Spec wise, they do seem similar.
    2. Using an xlr adapter can work, but you have to test it first. The reason is the following.
    a. The consumer sony camera may have only automatic levels, with no ability to change the audio levels.
    b. The xlr adapter may not power your condensor microphone.
    c. The pin out of the microphone input on the consumer connector, tip, ring, sleeve may be different than the xlr adapter is expecting. I assume the microphone input on the consumer camera is mono, and will put it on both channels, you probably want to use both channels of audio separately sometime.
    3. The consumer camera may not have manual focus, which could be a problem in many situations.

Overall, if you are traveling to another country and investing that kind of money, I would make sure my camera could handle all the situations I might unexpectly have. If possible, buy both cameras, test them at home for a couple of days, then send one of them back.

Then use your new camera in every type of situation and look at the results—-Before you travel to the location to shoot.

March 28, 2015 at 3:59 pm in reply to: How to record directly to PC with NX5U ?

Sure you can record from the output of the camera.

All those ways work but not the USB. The usb won’t send the signal.

HDMI and SDI can output high definition. Component and composite only standard definition.

Regarding which recording device, there are a wide variety depending on form factor, small or large, battery or wall powered, multiple camera inputs or not. And whether it works with the software you are trying to use it with on your computer, for instance, just recording, or live switching, or web streaming.

I have used the atomos shogun as a standalone recorder, without the PC.

March 11, 2015 at 6:52 pm in reply to: Multicam layout tracks by timecode gives 140 tracks

You are doing the right thing by experimenting.

Yes, first things first, you have to be sampling audio at the same rate. The default for audio for video is 48000 hz and 16 bit samples.

You should see if they are both set to that on both machines.

  • From what I remember, zoom doesn’t have timecode. Or rather, it always starts at 0.

Early on I ran into this issue, messed around with the zoom, and never found a work around to make the timecode be anything other than starting at zero. I end up using waveform sync by visual inspection.
