  • Also,

If you purchase the add on Vegasaur, it includes a feature which allows you to change the tapename on a bunch of selected clips.

There is a small internal battery that keeps the memory alive when the main battery is removed. My experience is that this dies at about 5 years and needs to go to the factory for repair.

However, the symptom you describe I have only experienced when I had a remote control device plugged into the lanc and the remote control was set for the camera to be shutdown. It would powerup, realize it is supposed to be shut down, then shut itself down.

Other than that, this sounds like a call to Sony tech support and most likely a trip to sony repair.

There are plenty of wired remotes. However, the camera has something like a 1 second delay while it finishes up closing the previous file, adding the metadata, and opening the new file.

I have come up with a solution that you may want to adapt.

I wanted to mark highlights in the footage as it happened so that I could find it in editing and not have to watch the full gains again.

    Version 1.
I put a small microphone plugged into the second xlr record input witch the sensitivity set to not very sensitive. Then I put the microphone close to my mouth and would say oooh into it for a highlight. This recorded on the second channel of the audio. In post, I could quickly find the tones and place my cuts.

    Version 2.
Then I had a small tone device with a button placed near the microphone. When a highlight occurred, I pressed the tone device which recorded a tone on the second channel of the video instead of people near me thinking I was going goofy.

Version 3. I bought a different tone device and electrically connected it into my microphone jack. ( I am an electrical engineer ) This eliminated any background sounds and was easier to find on the timeline.

One of these might work for your application.

I don’t remember how to inquire about the current version.

However, if you download the update, and follow its directions, one of the steps checks your camera’s current version and compares it to the new one. If it doesn’t need it, it will tell you.

  • If you use the software that comes with the camera to bring the files from the memory to the computer it will join the small files together and also eliminate the small drop of a couple of frames of audio.

The software that comes with the camera works on pcs.

If you want the version that works on Macs, then go to:

    https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/contentbrowser

The program costs about $20 and works better than the one included with the camera and runs on macs or pcs.

With Vegas 13 that doesn’t have to frustrate you.

What I do is create a bin for each camera and import each camera into its appropriate bin. I can either view the contents of each bin, or the total of all bins.

December 20, 2014 at 4:37 pm in reply to: Sony nx5u .. too many scenes

It is not clear what you mean by new scene.

However, this is how the camera records. It breaks the file into 2 gigabyte files sizes, which corresponds to about 10 minutes.

When you use the software that came with the camera to import the file from your memory card to your computer, it will automatically reconnect those files into the long file that you actually recorded.

I would love to see your footage.

I did a quick search also and did not find anything about the definition.

In my experience with Sony’s marketing mumbo jumbo, is that intelligent usually means that it is a compromise between two competing items. Could be between focus accuracy vs focus hunting, or battery life, or distortion etc.

However, best thing to do is a controlled experiment using both ways and see for yourself what the difference is and let us know.

November 15, 2014 at 2:40 pm in reply to: How to adjust exposure (Nex 5t)

The light meter and automatic exposure work by averaging all the light coming from the scene, then sets the exposure for that average.

    You have two options.
    1. Use AS (also called AE by Sony) to a minus setting. This way you can overide the Automatic Exposure and make it darker.

    2. Set up the scene, then turn the exposure to manual and darken the exposure manually until you get the exposure you want.

If you are the shooter and the subject, this is best done with a stand in. That is a person with the same tone and brightness as you the subject will be. Set the exposure for that person, then substitute yourself.
