The problem is that both the computer screen and the camera are not actually showing all the pixels at the same time. They are scanning.
Your eye is too slow to notice but the camera is not.
Three options.
1. Change the refresh rate on your computer screen to faster and slower and see if it goes away.
2. Leave the computer refresh alone, and shoot the camera at variousl speeds, like 60i, 30p, 24p. Generally the longer that the camera aperature is open, the less chance of that happening.
3. If the item on the lcd screen, is, actually coming from a computer, you an use a program like Camtasia to capture it and convert it directly into a video without your camera.John Lenihan

Have you tried the plug in called
Neat Video?I just read about it on one of the forums and tried out the demo. It seems to do a nice job on the noise issue.
I am seriously considering buying it.

Any FCP people out there have some advice?
On Sony Vegas Pro there is a setting which says
1. Import the audio as stereo OR
2. Import the audio as dual mono.I have choice two selected and it is a non issue.
Is there some FCP setting or conversion setting like that?

Thanks for the comparison information.Regarding the noise, I think you are right, we are never satisfied and camera manufacturers will continually try and improve their product.
I started out shooting on 8 mm silent film with 3 100 watt bulbs for indoor shooting.

Try copying all those files to a flash drive. Then try the CMU. Maybe the CMU will recognize the external flash as a drive and work.

I use Sony Vegas, so I am not able to help you with premiere.
Here are some general ideas.
1. Check the premiere posts
2. If you have Sound Forge, you can open the video/audio file and convert the audio to a different format then save the video/audio file.
3. If you have Neoplayer from Cineform, you can convert the video/audio file into an HD avi file using the Cineform codec. Then premiere should open it.john

Possible reason A.
If the FS100u is similar to the NX5u, There are two possible ways of recording audio on the camera.
1. AC3, which is a compressed format.
2. Or LPCM, which is a digital non compressed format.Virtually all consumer cameras that use AVCHD are using the compressed AC3 audio format.
Therefore, windows media player and some editors, by default assume the ac3 audio if it sees avchd video. If you recorded in LPCM you may need to manually tell premier what you are doing.
Possible reason B. You actually shot the audio in ac3. In order for windows media player to play it you need an ac3 decoder plug in. They are available free, although I think I found mine while poking around the cineform site.
Once you have the ac3 decoder registered on your computer, the various playback mechanisms should all be able to find it.

I agree, the noise is a pain in the neck. The other problem is the focus at zoomed levels which favors straight lines and not faces. I have documented that in earlier posts.
I use a 50 watt frezzi light on top of my camera and try and keep it turned as high as my subjects can stand. I at least try and keep the gain down to 12 db.
I may be interested in one or two of you NX5Us if you are serious.
Since I already have this model, I need matching ones.

I have three nx5u cameras and they are all equally noisy.
I came from a PD170 camera, which I consider the low light king. With the PD170, which was only SD and tape based, in low light past the maximum gain, it just got dark. Gracefully. I could usually boost the brightness in post.
With the NX5u when the light is low and the gain is up high, it gets noisy. There is not much I have found to do in post other than adjust the gamma to at least make the dark noise go black.
Last weekend I shot a multicam wedding with one NX5U and one EX1. The EX1 was much less noisy, but also darker. It was easier to boost the brightness on EX1 in post and have it look nice. So I can attest to that works better than the NX5U.
There is another issue here though. The NX5U has a longer zoom when fully zoomed than the EX1. Obviously the more zoom, the less light gets into the sensor. I did not compare the camera at identical zoom or in a controlled condition.
