Thanks for the tip. I would not have thought about using the wind noise button.
Another thing I do in a very quiet room is to turn off the autogain, and just manually adjust the input level for the intended sound, which I presume is a person speaking.

Here is what I would do.
Buy the HXR-FMU128 128 GB Memory Module.
Buy your favorite sd cards.
The camera can simultaneously record to both media at the same time. So you automatically have backups.
Trying to copy sd cards in the field when you are blowing and going is a dangerous thing to do. I would not do it unless I absolutely had to and had another person doing it, not the videographer.
Of course, you want to play with the camera doing under many conditions before you actually use it for the first deal breaker shoot.

XDCAM line is considered higher end than the NXCAM line.
Fujinon lens are considered better than Sony lens.John

I own and use the NX5U. Actually 4 of them for two or three crews at a time. Lots of blowing and going of events I can’t control and need the 20x zoom lens. Works very nicely. Because I know how to avoid its problems.
However,
If I were looking at just one camera, with have more time to set up shots like it sounds from your email, I would buy the 700. At least buy it quick then compare them and return one of them.

PS Sony is always coming out with new cameras, each one better. So defer buying anything until you need it. Or in other words, if you need it buy the best available and start earning money.

The short answer is that if you are working for a broadcaster, then ask them what format they want.
They may have a format that fits in their workflow better.The slightly longer answer is that as far as I know, there are NO broadcasts being made in 1080 x 60p. Only 1080 60i or 1080 30p. To get to 108060p is defined in the bluray specification, but not in current broadcast specifications, since it takes twice the bits of 1080 30p.
The reason I say find out what their requirements are is:
1. Broadcasts are done in MPEG2 not avchd anyway. Actually I have been reading about some tests using avchd in order to get 3D video, but it is not common.2. There are some broadcasters, like Fox Sports, that are broadcasting in 720 x 60p. So if you are looking to deliver highest quality, it probably is best if they do not have to transcode it.

1. Regarding the first clip, What were all of your settings. Not just the gain. Automatic, or manual, iris, etc, the whole thing.
2. Regarding the second clip, whenever you have a strong backlit subject you can either adust for the backlight or the subject, but you can’t really get both to be the perfect exposure.
3. However, you can simulate greater latititude by playing with the picture profiles. First try the presets, then experiment on your own. you can create a custom gamma curve that can both accomadate strong light and dark subjects.

Are you using the Sony provided Content Management Utility to bring the files to your computer?
I had audio drops at the file closure points when I tried to use a different method, but not when I use CMU software.

I endorse the use of the NX5U for recording HS sports. Regarding the focus, it is not a problem unless a coach or fan sticks their head into your shot. I use the autofocus. Because there is plenty of light, the auto aperature usually settles in around 5.6 to 8.0. There is plenty of depth of field. There are not straight lines behind your subject. And if you are following the ball, the background has motion blur so the camera is not tricked.
I recommend you spend the bucks for the FM128 so you have plenty of storage. If you do a soccer tournament or such, you can shoot 5 or 6 games before going home and saving to hard disk. (Yes, I have actually shot 5 soccer games (2 hours each, in the rain, on the same day.)
I recommend you buy several Sony 970 batteries. The big ones. Don’t buy any other brand of batteries. I did a comprehensive test of 5 brands of batteries and none lasted as long, despite their claims. And more importantly, none of them was as accurate on the battery life remaining. For instance, the off brand batteries would say 200 minutes left, one second later, be dead.
Regarding AVCHD, quality wise, it is great, indistinguishable from MPEG2 or AVI or MOV. However, to edit, it is a computer hog. Make sure you have the biggest, baddest CPU you can afford and one of the recommended graphics cards. Otherwise, when you are previewing your project on the timeline, it will play very slow.
Are you a professional, that is, do you get paid for this work? Or are you an advanced amateur? If you are a professional, I have more advice, but it costs more money.
