July 16, 2019 at 3:38 pm in reply to: Premiere Pro/Resolve Crashing in 4K/CUDA workflow.Merlin’s advice on cache maintenance is quite valid. As for speeding up editing, you can either transcode all your media as he suggests and work with the trancodes at full res, or simply use the Proxy workflow for editing 4k. Making smaller-frame-size ProRes or DNx proxies will smooth out the editing dramatically.

July 16, 2019 at 3:29 pm in reply to: Best File format transcode for 2k for slow/old mac?ProRes is always a better option than h.264, especially on underpowered computers. H.264 requires a lot of computing power to calculate frame-accurate edits and playback; ProRes (or DHx or Cineform) is a robust codec which, while making much larger files than h.264, will playback and scroll more smoothly.
Transcoding “in Premiere” is done either in the process of creating proxies (typically for editing 4k or larger media) or simply during the import process. In the Media Browser (you ARE using the Media Browser for importing, right?), click the wrench icon at the top and setup the Ingest process by checking Ingest.
- If you’re going to edit with Proxies, choose Create Proxies and select a ProRes preset that matches your footage aspect ratio (see this chart: https://www.dylanosborn.com/do/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/ProxyFrameSizeChart.pdf)
- If you just want to edit with transcoded media, choose Transcode and select the ProRes preset you want to use (on my system, the choices are PR422 and PRLT).
- Set the destination for your new files and click OK.
- Be sure to Uncheck the Ingest box at the top of the Media Browser after you finish, or everything you ever import will be transcoded, whether you want it or not.

I haven’t worked with file from that camera, but if it’s creating proxies for you, you can easily attach those. Right-click the clip(s) > Proxy > Attach proxies. Navigate to the folder containing the proxy for the highlighted file, highlight that proxy and click Attach. Premiere should find and attach proxies for all the clips from your selection that are in that folder. Then turn on proxies in the viewer (drag this button into the control area):

Even when editing with proxies, Premiere will export and render from the original files. Be sure to turn off proxies while color grading, especially if you’re using secondaries or Hue/Saturation curves.

June 28, 2019 at 3:07 pm in reply to: Adding text with 2 different colors to the Essential Graphics PanelThat’s brilliant. Could’ve used this a few days ago on a project that had lots of 3- and 4-word supers with a single word highlighted in another color. I had to do each of them in AE, but this is a very elegant solution. Bravo.

I did just a quick and totally rough luma key to illustrate one issue you’ll have making the sky replacement look unified with the foreground. The cloudy sky adds a white cast to the buildings, which would be different if the sky were actually blue. I don’t have a solution to this, just pointing it out so your expectations are realistic.

You should be able to just go to the multicam sequence in the bin, right-click and choose Open in Timeline, and turn on camera 5. Now it will show up in the multicam layout in your main timeline. You will still have to scrub your main timeline and select that camera each time you want to use it.

June 21, 2019 at 6:55 pm in reply to: Premiere Pro – Playback issues – no image where image should be ?Sweet though your system may be, sometimes original media are just too darn heavy to work with smoothly in their original form. You don’t mention what codec you’re shooting with on the A7s or the FS7, or if this is HD, UHD or 4k, but you might look at: 1) transcoding your media to an I-frame codec like ProRes or DNx; 2) the proxy workflow, specifically designed for smoothing out editing with heavy media; or 3) simply reduce your playback quality while cutting.
Here’s an interesting video from Colin Smith about having realistic expectations from your system. His audience is largely YouTubers and such, but it’s good information:

As you’ve probably noticed from the lack of responses, the answer is “no.” There’s no global method of changing elements in graphics clips. It would be great, though, especially if it’s a MOGRT created in AE, to be able to correct it in AE, overwrite it in Essential Graphics, and have that change update dynamically.

You might play with the Sequence Settings option for “composite in linear color.”
