May 1, 2011 at 11:49 pm in reply to: Pros & Cons having FCP on a Open Directory managed WorkstationThere are 4 types of accounts:
Local: Like the admin account the OS forces you to make when you first use a Mac.
OD Local: The same as Local but an OD server stores the passwords so one needs to be connected to one in order to login. This is the minimum if shared storage is used in order to manage permissions via ACL (Access Control List)
OD Network: The same as OD Local except the home folder is on a file server. This is what we use.
OD Network with Mobility enabled: Combination of OD network and local. The home folder is local and periodically syncs to a file server so the account exists both on the file server and any machine a user logs into. The problem is keeping all the local Mobile accounts synced. The server home and the local Mobile home seem to get out of sync easily.
If you have a Microsoft environment you can use AD to manage accounts as well.

You also should never put interlaced footage on the web… only progressive.

April 28, 2011 at 10:24 pm in reply to: QT opens file, FCP rejects it. who can tell me why?All the codecs you listed only work in fixed frame sizes and audio format. QT is more flexible than FCP. Check that your DV is 720×480 and DVCPro is 1280×1080 . I believe audio has to be PCM. Make sure the wrapper you’re sending FCP is not changing/scaling anything.

Sequence XML in and out! Just give me the picture lock version minus all the spinning plates.
We link to media that FCP never “sees”. Having to run every frame of video through FCP to be “blessed” would bring our productivity to a crawl! We need to work outside the box.
Aside from the price, the openness of FCP’s XML is want kicked Avid’s butt.

I’ve never seen an LTO mount on the desktop. If its in your devices then you should be good. It’s up to your backup/archive app and associated drivers to write and read data to it.

Fingers crossed! Can you imagine the workflows that would fall to the floor like a deck of cards without these!

Don’t know about LTO rentals but your best bet is a Cacha-A its self contained, has GigE, and built in archive software. A rental unit might make for confusing databases though. You would see all the tapes recorded on the unit.

That would be the only thing that may keep people from going to After Effects.

This is not all Apple’s doing, as it takes two to tango. The organizers of the Super Meet decided to take Apple’s money and shaft the others… no?
I would imagine Apple had conditions and gave little wiggle room, but the decision was made and the conditions accepted.
