Locally, over the past 25 years, there have been numerous occasions for a very quick assignment – but at a minimum of 2 hrs. Most of these quick assignments turn into more production work. If I have a cameraman available, it’s another assignment. If they go longer, then the client pays the extra hours. Most of our scheduled shoots are full day rates and part of a project contract. My studio locations are not in large cities. The hourly and day rates that I listed are representative of what most long-term videographers in the area charge.

For a 1/2″ 3 Chip Pro camera, operator, wireless mic simple shoot we start at $125/hr. with a 2 hr. minimum. $95/hr. for Canon XL1, Sony PD 170, etc. Day rate is usually 8 hours for the price of 7. A client may request the cameraman as director, additional audio tech, light kit, etc. Depending on the client and the shoot, these items can be negotiable. Don’t forget travel-time and mileage. What is the location and is there danger to the video crew. We try to include the cost of a pre-site survey. Of course, sometimes that is just not possible. Remember, the client is often clueless as to what it really takes for a successful shoot. He/she is depending on your expertise. Never bite off more than you can chew!

For a few years we connected our external drives via firewire with inconsistent results. Switched to USB2 and they work like a charm. Using them with Vegas 8 right now. We have 4 Maxtor 300Gb units.

This is exactly what we did, as the client only wants to listen to it on his portable DVD player. Thanks.

ACDSee is a great viewing/sorting/organizing/image-editing program offering a quick way to rename/renumber images. Our studios work with very large numbers of still images, often from client files that have meaningless order designations. Check it out.

Without seeing your text it is hard to offer suggestions. Depending on
the background, outline and/or drop shadow can make a significant difference in clarity. Also, some fonts are just more readable than others as well as certain color combinations. Maybe you could post a framegrab of text from your timeline.

Backlight your talent with magenta gels to help control the green spill from the screen itself. If you do not do this, you will spend serious time trying to fix it in post!

I agree, Eric. We always have the client’s project in several stages in their folder on our hard drives. Several versions of the veg file, a rendered avi, a DVDA prepared folder and project and a print-to-tape for backup. Letting DVDA do it’s thing is a simpler method and hard drive space is cheap. If changes need to be made, we go through the process again and DVD picks up the changes preparing the new folder and only deals with the changes. We recently upgraded our workstations to Intel Core 2 Duo procs, etc. Things render much, much faster now!
