September 12, 2010 at 9:41 pm in reply to: Render Format & Compressor ?

When exporting it’s usually best to export a QuickTime Using Current Settings. Then use that in Compressor. In the past, animation codec was used since it had an alpha channel. It’s now a fairly old codec. ProRes would serve you better – higher quality and smaller file size. But, getting back to your deliverable, it appears they are asking for a file they can use directly on their site. I think an FLV as described would look best, but you can make an H.264 movie in Compressor at their data rate with a 16×9 size of 720×360 or 4×3 at 720×480. Then simply change the extension of the file from .mov to .flv.

  • I’d still look at the audio with Wave Agent to make sure it’s actually 23.976, not 23.98. If it’s 23.980 that would cause drift. I’d also check that the video footage is really 23.976 and not 23.98 or 24. That, too, would cause slip. Oh, I just noticed you mentioned mp3s. Under no circumstances should you use mp3s with FCP. BTW, how long is one of your long clips? And, do you know if the camera and 788 gen-locked in any way?

I think ProRes HQ is overkill, although, it won’t cause your issue. It sounds as if Compressor is squeezing the image anamorphically which what you’d expect for placing a 16×9 image into a 4×3 frame. If you’ve told the DVD authoring program (which one are you using?) that the footage is 16×9 then the DVD should play correctly – widescreen on LCDs or plasmas and letterboxed on 4×3 TVs. However, you should ask the broadcaster for specific delivery specs. Besides letterboxing you also have the option to do a center cut if the footage was shot to allow that.

  • 23.97 is not a standard frame rate (if it’s even possible). It could be 23.98 (actually 23.976) or 29.97. If he recorded in 29.97 then that would cause slippage. You can download Wave Agent from Sound Devices. It will show the clip’s parameters and it can be used to change certain of those parameters. Be certain to backup your files before playing with this as it will change the file.

Do you have both the camera and hard drive connected to the FireWire port? Even though Macs have multiple FW ports, they have only one controller. While you usually can connect a couple of drives via FW without problems, when you connect the camera and a drive to FW you may have a problem.

Just look at your FCP Easy Setups. They are all the codecs editable in FCP.

Pads are always a good addition to an audio kit when you do a lot of live work. Pros will use a mixer to feed the camera because they can easily monitor and adjust levels, and mixers have flexible ins and outs so matching up mic/line levels is rarely a problem. And, if the camera allows, they can also monitor playback as the camera is recording. I’m not that familiar with the specifics of the G2, but with a pad you can always adjust the level to make the G2 happy.
