I just upgraded to iZotope RX 4 Advanced. It’s amazingly good. There’s a module that does adaptive dialog noise reduction. You can almost set it and forget it. I believe this module is now available in the regular (and less expensive) RX 4. I recently used the whole program to restore a 60 year-old vinyl recording and while that takes a bit of effort, the results are outstanding. RX roundtrips from Pro Tools, but also is a standalone app. At the moment there’s a bug if you want to send from FCPX, but they’re working on that. I had slightly boomy sound in a video setup recently and the De-Verb module cleared it right up. It’s a great piece of software. BTW, I’m not connected in any way to iZotope, but have used the software since its introduction and it just keeps getting better.

Was her project 720P or 1080P? I edit a lot of 720P footage. I noticed a while back that if I built graphics in AE at 720P, they appeared soft in FCPX. When I built the graphics in a 1080P composition, then the graphics were crisp. Maybe something similar is happening to you. Maybe edit in an HD project and export to SD. Or, maybe better would be to export the HD movie and the make the SD from that using AE, Compressor, Squeeze or whatever encoder you use.

This could be a result of ground loops. If any of the devices have 3-pin ac plugs try ground lifts and then run a ground wire between all devices. Another trick is to lift the shield from one end of a cable. The shield needs only be grounded at one end to work, but when you do this, it’s important to have each device grounded independently. In professional audio rooms “star grounding” is used. That means all cables have lifted shields, but all devices have a dedicated ground wire that’s run to a common “star point” ground.

Sounds like a job for Disk Warrior. It rebuilds your disk’s directory. I use it once a month to prevent weirdness and always when weirdness strikes. IMHO, it’s the one program every Mac user should have. It’s saved me many times.

Could this be a render issue? Maybe try trashing your renders. I’ve never seen (heard) this.

I”m fairly certain that the DVD spec allows only 29.97. The video may have pulldown added as the original footage may have been 23.976. I never trust QT re file parameters. I use MediaInfo (available in the App Store) to determine file parameters. There are a couple MediaInfos. The one I use has a big ? in the center of its icon. Use it to look at your MPEGStreamclip exports. You’ll have good info re frame rate and field order. What you are seeing sounds like interlace problems. It’s been a long time since I’ve dealt with interlaced files. It was always a pain and I always did a short encode of a section where there was strong motion and burned it to the DVD as a test.

How are you recording the new audio? If in a DAW is the frame rate set the same as the video frame rate. If they’re different, that will cause drift. What’s the sample rate of each file?

Audacity can do this. I found these instructions a while back in this thread.

1. Open Audacity.
2. Open the mono Wav file.
3. Click on the bottom left corner Project Rate icon to change the sample rate to 8000.
4. Go File-Preferences and click on File Formats. Under Uncompressed Export Format, choose other.
5. Choose WAV (Microsoft) for the Header and U-Law for Encoding. Hit OK.
6. Now just select the audio file and use File-“Export As WAV” Choose the location and save.

Once I did all of this, the phone messaging system accepted the file.
