Did you trash prefs and repair permissions? Have you tried opening the project on different machines? If it works on another machine, then FCP probably has to be reinstalled. Can you open any other projects and do they play properly?

I’d call the folks at JK Audio. They have many devices designed to record phone calls. They’d be able to hook you up with one that works with your phone. For example, there are models that get their signal from a regular phone line from the wall to your phone, and others that hook up using the handset cord. There are lots of way to skin that cat. Make sure you use 23.976 not 23.98 when entering the frame rate. Many apps (AE for example) produce the exact framerate you enter. 23.98 is just shorthand for 23.976. FCP calls 23.976 23.98, but it is actually 23.976.
