Most problems I’ve read about are folks not following the steps Zane outlined, and those using FCS3 with Snow Leopard. Many are staying with Leopard instead of SL.

Removing that sound with FCP or ST will be difficult. You need a program like Isotope RX to do it. What you want to do is called spectral repair.

Color Correction and cheap usually don’t go together. A monitor capable of grading HD footage like the FSI starts a little under $2k. Then you need a card or box like the AJA Kona LHi to feed the monitor (also capture from tape or devices and output to tape or devices). That said there are less expensive cards to do SD/HD I/O. Checkout the DeckLink Studio

The parameter that directly affects file size on a DVD is the data rate. So, if your data rate is 4mbps (million bits per sec), in 1 minute you’d have 60 x 4 million bits of data. If the data rate is 8mbps then you have twice as much data. The way the Compressor presets work (and you can see this if you dig into the Inspector), if you want to put 150 minutes of video in the same space as 120 minutes you have to lower the data rate. If you look at the Inspector you’ll see that Compressor allots 5mbps for the 120 min preset and 3.7mbps (lower) for the 150 min preset.

Toast will do it and with multiple DVDs if necessary.

While the drive is alive, as a backup before your 1TB arrives, burn all the data to DVD-ROMs. If that drive dies before you retrieve the data, you’ve got trouble. The other thing you can try is run Disk Warrior on the drive. It will fix up the directories on the drive. This has saved me any number of times from what looked like dead drives. IMHO, it’s the most indispensable utility for a Mac. When you get your 1TB drive I suggest you simply copy all the data over to it.
