Have you tried to Log & Transfer the MXFs with FCP? Try that with one file and see if there’s a difference. Sometimes QT and FCP interpret files incorrectly. Here’s a link to Media Info. It’s a program that analyzes files. It might be more accurate and I think it’s a free download.

When you monitor in RECORDING you are in effect listening to the audio after it’s been recorded. It takes time for the audio to be processed and this is why there’s a slight delay.

I tested this and was able to capture DV to DVCPro HD 720P (59.94) I used a Sony DSR-1500 with component output. File written was 960×720. Our Kona driver is 7.1 NDD.

If you have a Kona 3 or similar you can easily transcode from 720 to 1080. Many docs are shot with 720 and then mastered to 1080 if required.

As the audio will be longer than the video I’d first layout the audio on a timeline set so its timecode starts with your first TOD time. Then lay in the video clips at the timecode indicated by their slates. Hopefully everything remains in sync. Be sure your timeline setting matches your video. Use the appropriate Easy Setup.

That’s an odd error as I believe the MPEG-2 playback component is installed with FCP, but maybe not with FCP 5. Have you tried using Compressor to convert? If not, try it and make sure Frame Controls are on and the quality settings are set to best.

My vote is for post FX. But layer the fx. Not only flame, but smoke and ejected particles. There are terrific tutorials at Video Copilot.
