Can you get your files back onto a P2 card? If so, you could try repairing in the camera. There are 3rd party programs like P2 Log that repair P2 clips. I believe it will work with files on a drive. P2 Log has a demo you can try out.

What codec did you use in editing your program? What are your system specs? While Episode is a top-notch encoder, Compressor will give excellent results. And you own it. Search The DVD Studio Pro and Compression Techniques forums for many encoding workflows.

Copying the same file to the right side doesn’t make it stereo. It is dual mono. You’d have the same result by panning your single track to the center and raising the gain approx. 3 db. Doing the same with surround buys you nothing in terms of it sounding like true surround, you’ll just have identical sound coming out of all the channels. Most of the time, dialog is panned center, (although, off-screen dialog might be place to one side) and music & FX are stereo (or surround).

You’re correct in using Compressor to encode your video to ProRes. Each version of ProRes uses a different data rate. If you search you’ll find the rates. However, the highest to use in this case is 422and LT will probably look the same (LT is a lower rate than 422. thereby, making smaller files). Try both and see. While there are differences in opinion, most advise that HQ should only be used for 2k footage and above.

You can try Panasonic’s P2CMS program. I believe it’s a free download. It can do some repairs of P2 contents structure. Also, MXF4Mac, Raylight for Mac and Calibrated Software have P2 import capability.

You may be right about SL causing issues. It certainly did when it was first released. Make sure you have the updated Panny drivers for SL. Did yo do a clean install – wipe the drive and install from scratch? I know not doing that did cause many problems. If you search you’ll find those discussions.

The idea of compressing or encoding a file is to reduce its size (without losing too much quality) so it fits on a DVD. That’s why your 22GB file becomes smaller. So the basic steps to make a DVD are: export a full-quality QT from your NLE. Then, compress that file to the mv2 (mpeg2) format used with DVDs, and finally, author the DVD. Some authoring programs also do the encode. However, if you have Compressor, I suggest you learn it as it will do a much better encode than an authoring program. How are you encoding the mv2 (mpeg2) and making the DVD?

You’re “compressing” the ProRes file to mv2 which decreases its size. A single-layer DVD will hold 4.3GB. If you increase the data rate in Compressor you’ll get a larger file, but if the data rate is too high it will choke many players.
