    I think most folks would say hardware conversion is superior to software. The Kona 3 is excellent if you capture material from tape (or another device). Also, it has hardware acceleration for DVCProHD (it takes over the scaling from FCP which doesn’t do a great job, anyway). The best hardware converter (of all sorts) is a Teranex. But, due to its cost you usually only find them in large facilities. I’ve used Instant HD and was not overly impressed. I use Compressor for SD to HD file conversions.

    You want to use the same codec for all three clips. These days most folks would use ProRes: 422 if the clips are HD and LT if they’re SD. Also, the frame rates and frame sizes should be the same. I use Compressor to re-size & changing frame rates. If changing frame sizes or frame rate turn on Frame Controls in Compressor’s Inspector and change the quality settings for re-sizing & rate conversion to Best. BTW, H.264 is not a FCP edit codec. The codecs listed in FCP’s Easy Setups are all edit codecs.

    Did you Send to Compressor or export a QT and use that in Compressor? If you used the Send to Compressor workflow, try Export QT Using Current Settings. Then use that file in Compressor to make the mp4. Also, if you have any gaps between video clips in your sequence, fil the gaps with slug.

    It’ll output the video with t/c and other info supered. You set it up in the Display menu (I think). It’s definitely in the menu structure. If you have a timecode reader you can feed it from the t/c out of the camera.

    Use Match Frame to bring up the original clip and then edit in the original audio.

    As Walter suggests, buy the beefiest machine you can. If you run 3rd party products like CS5 and certain encoding products, they will definitely take advantage of multi-threading and multiple cores. And one day, FCP will catch up.

    I believe FCP5 was the first to work with P2 and had some issues. It’s also possible that the newer drivers weren’t happy with FCP5. Glad you got your files transferred.

    All ProRes is 10-bit. My suggestion is to use ProRes rather than HDV. I believe you’ll have superior edit performance that way. The various flavors have different data rates. ProRes 422 is probably fine. If you have questions about the various flavors run short tests with each. Pick a demanding sequence with lots of action and camera moves. Checkout ClipWrap as a way to work with m2ts. They have a trial version. Also, checkout Chris Poisson’s Cow tutorial on hdv to ProRes.
