Check this out David. 4 months ago we rebuilt twenty three 30 second ‘tips’ spots we made originally in FCP7 for air on the sister network of one of our clients. When repackaging, we took the after effects graphics (backgrounds, transitions, etc) and keyable elements into Motion and made each a ‘theme’ based on the network name. We then used that theme in FCPX to rebuild our spots.

Last week they finally wanted delivery – but lo and behold they have a NEW graphics package. We updated our generators to use the new elements in motion. The updates translated throughout the spots that used those generators. Obviously some font work had to be done in FCPX, but we revised all 23 in a day. I haven’t confirmed with the editor this worked perfectly, but in theory it did because he got it done so quickly.

The automatic syncing solution was mentioned to me several times after we made the walk throughs. I prefer to let individual editors update their machines when ready. An updated or tweaked template that gets automatically synced could wreak havoc on an edit in progress. We train everybody to keep on top of their own updates. It takes more effort, but also eliminates nasty surprises.

We do maintain a master database of templates on the NAS server. Then each person copies over locally when ready/able.

I originally said mac pro, but then I revised it to say macbook pro. Haswell processors for notebooks are due to be released on June 4th. This would apply to basically all MacBooks.

Oh man, if Haswell processors come out with updated macbook pros in 2 weeks you’re gonna be so mad! Just an FYI, I think you can return a mac within 30 days if they release an update in that window of time.

I normally keep background render on, this is just a little bug that I don’t doubt will be patched up sooner rather than later. Even now, I can’t seem to recreate the experience in a predictable way. It’s just some weird bug.

I’ve submitted tickets on it so I’m sure they’re quite aware. There are also many Apple Discussion forum posts out there about it.

What you’re doing when you delete the renders is forcing the program to rerender at the same time as you are exporting. I think the problem is that render files are getting corrupted and by blowing them away the program is starting fresh, so to speak.

Interesting. What’s the monthly rental cost for FCPX again?

You know, I shot a wedding in early March with some of these lenses on a steadicam style vest rig. I had mixed results. I wouldn’t say the AF is super fast by any means, but sometimes in a run n gun situation you deal with what you get, you know?

I did end up getting a Rokinon 85mm with manual aperture adjustment and the cine ring built in. I got the canon mount as we have an adapter that’s pretty solid. The cine ring is great for follow focus.

You can also try the 19mm and 30mm Sigma set that came out from B&H a few months ago. I love how little these lenses are – much easier to carry around in a pocket for quick switching.
