I’d blow out my preferences with preference manager.

What is the aja or bmd speed test result for your drive?

Strange. We’ve used it successfully with an ATTO R680 as well as our current card, the Areca 1882x. We found AFP to be even faster with Mavs, especially over 10Gbe. It’s NSF mounts that have been the problem child for us.

Which ethernet switch card are you using? Small Tree? How about the PCI card?

You’re connecting to the server with finder by going to ‘connect to server’ typing in ‘afp://server IP address’, right? You’ve got jumbo frames and all systems connect correctly?

Might be time to give Bob Zelin a call. He’ll fix it.

I would do a clean install of mavericks on the new HD. Then I would drag/drop anything I needed from the old HD rather than migrate everything. It’s good practice to do this, even if it results in you having to install plugins, drivers, etc again. You have the benefit of knowing everything you’re working with is up to date and not bringing over anything buggy that you don’t want from the original HD.

    Good luck!

  • I was going to get a Promise2 8 bay, but then I saw on the Promise website the the 8 drive array version uses 5900rpm drives.

    Here:
    https://www.promise.com/promotion_page/promotion_page.aspx?region=en-global&rsn=101

    At the very bottom:
*Pegasus2 R8 32TB model is populated with 5900 RPM SATA drives. All other Pegasus2 models are populated with 7200RPM SATA drives.

So instead of dropping $4300 on a Promise with reduced speed drives, I ordered the Areca TB2 8 bay empty chassis and am populating it with eight 4TB Hitachi Deskstars. Total cost – $3500. Bob Zelin has tested these and confirmed they’ll get about 1300 MB/s. Pretty ample for a backup array.

  • Exactly right Gary. Plug it in and leave it alone. It’s preformatted as RAID5 and that’s exactly what you want.

In FCPX you have the preference to ‘optimize media’, which converts it to ProRes. A screen recording will look bad if you do this for some reason. Make sense?

You could, in theory, Quicktime screen record the meters playing the actual music. Then, import that screen recording and just drop it in as another layer.

Do not optimize the media for the screen recording if you’re on an iMac. Your frame rate will go from around 60fps to about 5fps.

I want FCPX Library files to work on a NAS via AFP. NSF performance compared to AFP is a not good at all. Over GbE NFS can get about 38MB/s speeds vs 115MB/s for AFP. None of us can figure out why.
