After $5000, is $299 that overwhelming? You get 3 extra USB3 ports, thunderbolt 2 passthrough, an extra ethernet, HDMI 4k output, plus two extra audio jacks. It doesn’t run hot and hasn’t got a huge footprint. It’s nice to be able to see the detail of my 4K media when I want it on the big screen. When I’m working with 1080 projects the Blackmagic mini monitor does the job fine.

It’s not like there are a lot of ways to get 4k playback out of a 5k iMac without spending quite a bit more than $500, you know?

Can also get a black magic mini monitor to layer into it when he wants to use a 10bit SDI preview via HD.

Just get an Belkin thunderbolt 2.0 hub with hdmi out. It supports 4k over the hdmi port. My 5k retina pushes 4k via that hdmi as well as a second Cinema Display over thunderbolt.

Select the video clip. Match frame – Shift F. It’ll pull up the clip in the browser with the same in’s and out’s. Then, while making sure all audio is turned ON on the source clip, Replace from Start (Option+r). From this point you can use the inspector to turn off and on whatever audio you keep.

This has been an annoyance since Mavericks. Everything works fine with Prores if you have the prores codecs installed (usually by owning Compressor, FCPX, etc).
One workaround is that all codecs will play fine in Compressor, but sadly the space bar preview of older codecs like animation. Basically we ended up converting our graphics toolkit type files here to Prores444 if it had an alpha, or to Prores standard if it didn’t contain an alpha.

Record like the wind. Just make sure you pick the right microphone in the options. All our tutorials were recorded with it.

Make each student keep their library on a WD Passport Hard drive or similar that they keep for themselves. When they aren’t there, the library can’t open and cause any problems.
