Are any of you operating in 64 bit kernal? All the new mac pros default to the 64bit kernal now, not the 32. You have to google how to change mac pro 2010 to 32bit kernal. It requires cutting and pasting something into your terminal command line, but you’ll be stoked when it’s done.

The 12 cores default to 64 bit now. I finally figured out why frame sync would drop on edit to tape with aja kona 3. Booted in 32 bit and frame accuracy has returned.

That 1099 rule sounds awful. Am I the only who wants to just make enough to survive for a while? Operating a mildly successful business seems like it just makes you a target for punitive tax policy these days.

Just to clarify, are you an LLC now or do you operate as a freelancer off your SSN? The biggest reason to incorporate I found was to avoid hassles like this.

Just out of curiosity, you have turned off the ‘idle disks when possible’ preference pane option, haven’t you? It’s the simplest reason and I didn’t realize it until I discovered it last week – it can also apply to external RAID arrays.
That said, smaller files do tend to have a bit of an initial lower data rate. Under 1 gig on my AJA system test can show that. However, it’s not been a big issue for me yet. If you can make the lag show up on the test, perhaps post a screengrab and I’ll tell you if it’s far off from mine. I have noticed a few little weird things about these drives – something cold opening a finder window on it takes a second or two. Didn’t happen with 1TB Caviar Black drives…
A while back, I built an array from 1TB RE4-GP (Green Power) drives, which turned out to be totally not usable. There were massive delays in the drives which made them unusable. I wonder if WD is using that same power save tech with these drives?
UPDATE: I just installed an app called “SleeplessHD” off of macupdate that hits the drive every 5 seconds. Enable it at login and that should fix ya. It’s working for me now. We’ll see what happens….

WD refused to advertise the drive speeds of the RE4GP drives, and at best they were 5400 RPM. Although these 2TB drives are 7200rpm, I wonder if WD is using similar power save tech with these drives?

Last week I ran into an issue where iTunes 10 refused to deliver genius results for several days, each time delivering a network error. I found out that bypassing the router (airport extreme) and hardwiring directly into the modem worked. The extreme works great – but there was some server issue that caused that problem – even though I stay hardwired into the Extreme because this particular mac is in the same room as the router.
Further, we don’t know the conditions he works in. If his router is far enough away, through several walls, next to an airport, on a bad channel, or if the radio in his router is failing – that can all have a big effect on speeds. My advice to hardwire would merely identify if the router is the problem. Even better, he should hardwire directly into the modem
You’re right – internet speeds will always be far slower than even the slowest wifi, but only if it works correctly. A router is much easier to replace than an ISP. -
Cable internet has always been fster than dsl in my experience. Good luck!
