I’m hoping it’s going to be fixed in an update. Could be I got a bad card. Or even I have a conflict with a periph. It’s a pretty heavily loaded system. There are lots of tngs it could be. I’m sure you’ll be fine. It is really fast!

Seems like you have really slow internet? Can you run speedtest.net and post the results? You may also want to plug your mac straight into your router instead of using airport. I get much faster speeds that way.

It can do 64, but only in 64 bit kernel – which all the new macs default at now. I only like to upgrade my main work station every 2 years – and then I pretty much don’t touch it after that. I went a little crazy in hopes that more 64 bit apps come out soon that can take advantage of all that RAM (Final Cut Studio 4, etc.).

I have a question – do you have your 12 core yet? Did you get the 5870 graphics card? Have you had any weird freezes with bizarre horizontal lines across the screen? I’ve frozen about 4 or 5 times now with these weird horizontal lines. It’s pretty annoying and not associated with particular programs. I read that the 5870 on PC had problems with vertical line freezes when it overheats. This may be the price we pay for ‘bleeding edge’ workstations….

I put in 64 gigs in a 12 core last week. Check out owc and it’s pretty self explanatory.

Thanks guys – I think I’m just going to use a cutout without anybody’s particular face. One idea I wanted to use was list, with pictures, all of the politicians who have admitted to violating the law that this particular ballot initiative in California aims to repeal. I’d rather not say more than that though :).

Because I’m not some 19 year old volunteer making a poorly crafted ad, I do have to be a tad more careful though. I’m a 36 yr old volunteer making a poorly crafted ad. Apparently there’s a difference :).

    Thanks for all the advice!

Thanks guys. Dreamstime was coming up empty and I was just curious if there was a “Newssource” type resource for this type of thing.
    Cheers,
    John

These are actually advocacy ads for a ballot initiative here in California, so a there’s no specific candidate – however I’m sure the advocacy group will need a byline if nothing else. The biggest issues I’m having is finding political photos of candidates I can use legally. Any ideas?

Hunter, forget web design. You can pick the basics of that up without having to learn all the CSS crap and whatever ridiculousness is included in that – and it’ll all change by the time you get hired to use it anyways. If you want to learn web design, see if your college has a continuing education course for the public. You can get a web design certification like I did, and you’ll get the basics without lots of calculous or whatever ridiculous things the computer science people will throw at you.

Marketing. Take Marketing classes. Learn how to make ads, manipulate audiences, and get mass media results. My school is really great at cranking out news editors – terrible at cranking out producers. It’s one thing to know how to use a tool, but marketing training will teach you why you’re using it.

You wanna win? Be a producer who edits – not an editor who produces. The future will be advertised.

Ordered the Areca 1680x, but ended up getting the 1680ix, which was completely not the card I wanted. It was Friday night, and I could have let the system sit for days – and then I read that Highpoint’s 4322 card is actually made by Areca and basically is the same card as the 1680x, so I put the Highpoint card from my old system in the new one. It works better with the 2Tb drives than it did with the 1Tb drives.

Perhaps Areca could come up with a better naming system for their cards. You have all the letters and numbers in the world – maybe don’t put an tiny little ‘i’ in the name of a completely different card if you want people to buy your product….unless of course you’re Apple!

Going on 5 years with Highpoint, not a single failure yet (knock on wood).

Coming from an octo 2.8 Harpertown, I’d been running into some annoyingly long wait times in After Effects, so I decided to just go a little nuts and get 64 gigs of RAM, 2.93 12 core, and a 512 SSD for the OS. Final Cut is certainly more robust. I’d noticed for the last year or so that working in HD I’d have a slight video delay when playing back on my monitor for clients – that’s gone. The real bump comes in CS5 though. After Effects ram previous are ridiculously fast now. The SSD is snappy. The best news is, Aperture actually sort of works.

I can’t wait for 64bit Final Cut Studio. Who knows when that’ll ever happen though – unless the find a way to put it on a phone.
