Your explanation of the problem is a bit confusing. Are you trying to use blend/transfer modes or are you using a solid with 3D enabled and want it to receive shadows only.

As far as blend modes go, if you have one set in a precomp and want it to transfer to the final comp, you need to enable continuous rasterization of the precomp in your final composition. It’s the icon that looks like a little sun in the switches column.

Can you post a still of your scene/video, so we have a better idea of what is needed to be done? You can post a still by clicking the 3rd to last icon in the reply dialogue, uploading it, then click the uploaded still and copy and paste the embed code into your reply.

Are you working in a composition with non-square pixels? Press “Cntl+K” and look at the Pixel Aspect Ratio, unless it’s set to square(how pixels are displayed on a computer), shapes, objects can look squished and distorted. When broadcast – they will look normal.

Below the comp window is a toggle pixel aspect correction button, you can check that and AE will approximate how your video will look as a final. Things may look jagged & rough, but it’s just cause it’s stretching/squishing the image a bit, won’t affect the final render. FYI-if you are working in HD or only for the web, you should always be working with square pixels.

Track mattes and blending modes are not supported using the Ray-traced 3D Renderer. I’m not exactly sure how you can precomp them, and have them work in a final comp if you are using the 3D Renderer.

  • A look Chris&Trish Meyers have recommended in the past is to duplicate your layer, and add a gaussian blur, then screen/overlay(transfer mode to taste) it back on to your footage, then adjust opacity if needed.

I would use a fews scripts. First I would use Comps from Spreadsheet.. You could make a bunch of different templates for the names—each with a different duration, and include the fadeup in the comp. If you set up your spreadsheet correctly, names in different columns, you run it and each name drops will be created into a new comp. Next I would use Randomizer, to handle the random position. Then use Animation > Keyframe Assistant and put a overlap of about half the average duration of the comps, that should give you the random feel of them fading in and out.

Another thing you could try with the spreadsheet script, would be to make a template with a 100 template layers that seem to fade out randomly. Set that up, then run the spread sheet comp 200 times, then just drop the 200 comps into a final timeline, and render. This would probably make the project a little more manageable, and over 100 names, would still feel pretty random.

  • Go for 32GB of RAM. I’d sacrifice one of the 3TB drives for the extra RAM every day of the week.

You might also play around with CC Glue Gun, I’ve made some pretty convincing drips with that too.
