If you have a 3d app, you could create the images in that with camera move. Bring in to AE and use the “Cartoon” effect. Play around with the Detail/Threashold and Fill—steps and smoothness.

Add a roughen edges effect and you would have something pretty similiar.

  • Pretty sure it has to do with the avid codec. I’ve exported a lot of video from the avid to be adjusted in AE and unless it’s 4×3 SD AE never interprets it correctly. If you ever find the answer let me know…I’ve been looking for years.

Select the layer in the composition. Now go to your project window and click on the layer you want to use, alt-drag it on to name of the layer in the composition.

There is another alternative, but you would have to render out your precomp, if you later decide to change something, you would have to re-render.

Render your footage and import it, now right click on the footage and select interpret footage. On the Main Options tab at the bottom you will find a loop option, just set it to loop as long as you need it too.

This method works well if you know that your footage is finalized and you don’t need to make any changes.

    $1,000,000

Start with the “drop in” preset. Change the position to where you would like, in the example, it’s only moves about 75 pixels.

In the range selector properties twirl down “advanced” and change the shape to “Ramp Up”.

    Change Ease High to 100%

Now delete the start keyframes. Set a Offset keyframe to -100% move down the timeline and set another Offset keyframe at 100%.

The Borrowed doesn’t look like a warp. Just looks like he added an animate “scale” to the text and went from 0 to 100% in a 4 frames.

Try going to the visibility pulldown and choosing the layer you want to act as a mask at the obscuration layer.

August 5, 2010 at 5:18 pm in reply to: Creating 3D Circle of stars

This is the way I would do it. Create 1 star, place it in center of comp and turn on the 3d switch. Move the star along the z position to what you what the radius of your circle to be…farther back, the smaller it will be, larger radius. Now duplicate that star as many times as you need—say 4 if you need 5 stars.

Create a null and turn on it’s 3d switch. Parent 4 of the 5 stars to the null. To equally space 5 stars, 360/5 = 72 degrees. Rotate the null 72 degrees along the Y access. Now deselect 1 more star and rotate 72 more degrees. Do this until all the stars are equally spaced in a circle. Now you can parent all the stars back to the null, rotate, scale, position and they will all move in seq.

You can also add a camera and apply depth of focus. If you want all the stars to always be facing the camera. cntl+alt+o and change the orientation to always orient to camera.

August 4, 2010 at 7:14 pm in reply to: transform animation jitter

It sounds like you are experiencing issues with interlacing. The edge of your graphic has a sharp edge and the upper/lower field issues cause the edge to jitter.

Assuming all your render settings are correct, couple things you can try, move your grx up or down 1 pixel, sometimes that can help a bit. Another thing to do is apply the effect Blur>Reduce Interlace Flicker. Usually a value of 1 or 2 will take care of the problem.

August 4, 2010 at 5:11 pm in reply to: Re: After Effects Expressions;Chapter 3, Comp 16

    Thank you Dan, works now.

Since I saw that Marcus mentioning you in his book I just wanted to take the time to thank both you and Marcus for the incredible resource that is “After Effects Expressions”. I’ve been using AE since COSA made it, but have never used any expressions besides the pickwhip since they were introduced.

I’m now reading it for the second time and I’m really starting to understand this powerful tool in AE(even managed to write a few expressions on my own—that worked!).

Just wanted to know how grateful I am to Marcus for writing this book(and your contributions as well).

    Thanks again,

August 4, 2010 at 2:14 pm in reply to: Newbie question about workflow

Take this with a grain of salt, I don’t use Premiere but Avid(I do use it with AE a lot though).

My workflow for this is to make a new sequence for each clip I am going to bring into AE, labeled export 1, export 2…. Reasoning is that most likely the export1.mov will be deleted sometime in the future(despite having terabytes of drives, it still is finite). If sometime in the future I need to go back an adjust one of those clips, I can digitize my future, go to “export 2” sequence and just make another quicktime.

As you are new to this, let me suggest to you that you when working on projects, no matter how simple you work on always organizing them in such a way that will make it easy to recreate/update them with as little pain as possible. Recently, I was asked to update a video I worked on 7 years ago, because it was organized and I had all the elements I needed to fix it and spent only 2 hours changing the video…recreating everything from scratch would of taken a day, maybe more.

There isn’t a standard foolproof method of organization, find what works for you though and try to use that every for every project. Also, when you start working with others you want to make sure that if someone else has to use some of your work they can figure out what you’ve done and can recreate it also.

    Hope this was helpful.
