Has to be the 3 large static layers. You can check this by AE 2022 by clicking the Frame Render time in the bottom left of your comp timeline. You might want to look at finding an online render farm. I use it for C4D renders—single frames on my system might take 12 minutes and render farm places get me a 300 frame render finished in an hour.

I did a little playing, cranked up the lifespan and my thought is that even after the waves have left the screen(IE don’t need to be rendered anymore), AE is still calculating their positions. If you have accumulated a lot of waves that would slow things down drastically.

I think you hit with Particular. One or more emitters(probably grid) pushed back in z space, emitting particles shooting at a camera that is rotating on it’s z-axis.

Been working with AE for 20+ years and expressions are still a struggle for me. Lefebvre done a good job with his book, but some times the ‘why/how’ explanation is lacking. So thanks for dumbing that down for me. If you ever make it to Grand Rapids MI, beers on me.

After Effects 3D engine doesn’t stack shadows. If that’s the look you want to achieve, you are going to have to fake it.

I think you could do this two ways. Since the shadow is color as the background. You could use the Perspective/shadow effect and set the shadow opacity to 100% and use the background color to be your shadow.
Another way to do it would be to duplicate your front circle layer, remove the position keyframes, offset it to the shadow position and parent it to the front circle. Now change your large circles Track Matte to be Alpha Inverted and it the matte circle will cut a shadow out of the large circle.

Alt + Click the position keyframe stopwatch to open up the expression editor. Hit enter on the number keypad to leave in the default expression. Right-Click on position, select Keyframe Assistant/Convert Expression to Keyframes.

I played around with multiple displacement effects and turbulent noise to displace the text. Then to add some color, I duplicated the fractal layer and tweaked the settings a little to make the fractal larger. Brought that into the final comp, placed it as the top layer and use the ‘preserve underlying transparency’ to just add color where the text was. Attached a quick sample project that should be a good starting point for you.
