This has been discussed but you can’t bank your business on FCP7 working on Lion right now.

There are no more updates on FCP7 and when Apple switches to Lion there will be problems with FCP7. There are always problems when converting OS systems. Normally updates fixed the issues but now instead of getting FCP 7.1.3 you’re stuck with 7.0.3 and a FCP7 that could be unusable.

I plan on buying it and learning it when the price of FCX drops to $100.

Back in the day, Premiere was terrible compared to FCP. Adobe has made huge strides improving Premiere but there was no real reason to learn and use Premiere. Now there is a good reason to learn it and thankfully we can all benefit from the hard work of Adobe.

I like it. The video is wicked.

Aside from the top ten reasons given by Adobe to switch to Premiere, I can think of 50 other reasons to pick Premiere over Final Cut X.

Well then your advice to him is wait a little while and see if Final Cut Pro X will deliver.

My advice to him is that Adobe Premiere already delivers everything you need and you can make the switch sooner than later to keep up with the changing times. Did I mention that there is a seamless workflow from After Effects and Photoshop and Premiere?

What’s the difference of moving to Premiere or FCPX? He’s moving to a whole new platform either way. My guess is that Premiere may actually be more beneficial for him since he can open old FCP 6 legacy files which FCPX cannot. Plus, Premiere has all the other features of XML, OMF, and EDL support already working natively. And you can output to tape.

I’m trying to give him advice on the best scenario. I said he should buy FCPx if he doesn’t need any of those things.

Not sure why you would need bars and tone when you can’t output to tape.

Apparently, there will be third-party vendors to help the FCPX community achieve whatever it is they desire sometime in the future. I read that somewhere.

I think it depends on what kind of work you do. If you have no need to import/export XML, EDL, or OMF, multicam, output to tape I would consider FCPX.

If you need any of these features I would switch to Premiere or Avid.
