No problems with my BMD Intensity Pro. It even keeps in sync with audio being pushed out via line out to an amp/speakers, something FCP 7 and Premiere have had issues with regard to frame offset.

Spoke too soon. Apparently you need to install the ‘Red Apple Workflow Installer V.2.o first for it to work:

Strange, when I try to import .r3d files, they’re greyed out and I’m unable to import. When I try to import the folder I get ‘No Importable Files. None of the folders or files could be imported. Change the selection and try again.” This is coming from attempts to import files off of a drive as well as directly from a RED SSD. Odd.

I agree with both of you that the next guy should learn PPro (which coming from FCP7 isn’t a major undertaking), but I can’t force him to do anything — we’re both hired guns. Guess there’s not any way to export the markers and other metadata to Pro Res files — it wouldn’t be a huge PITA to export all of the individual interview selects as ProRes files, but I’d like to be able to have the markers either travel or act as clip names, but it doesn’t look to be possible from my scan of the manual. Oh well, thanks for the help.

March 24, 2010 at 2:49 am in reply to: Cost Effective Solution for 8 TB eSata Setup

    Hi Bob —

Sorry, I think I was unclear. I like the OWC chassis that I have — I’ve been asked to find a solution for a friend that’ll provide between 8 and 12 TB if possible in a cost effective manner. We’re working on a personal project and while we’re funding it out of our own pockets, he doesn’t want to be stupid and buy crap equipment — in my experience it only ends up costing you more in the long run, both in more gear and heartbreak.

When you get beyond four bay chassis, the costs starts to go up quite a bit. I was simply wondering what folks liked in terms of a five, six or eight bay chassis that I could then populate with those ‘expensive’ 2 TB drives… that are currently around $150, if you don’t want to spring for the enterprise versions. I was able to populate my OWC chassis with 2 TB Hitachis that got me to 6 TB @ RAID 5 for under a grand, which I was thrilled with, and felt like the gear was pretty good quality for the cost.

I’m not necessarily expecting that I’ll find a solution that’ll work better than simply buying two of the OWC four bay chassis. I was sort of hoping that someone might, y’know, share their thoughts on gear that they liked. Sorry if I was unclear.

    Cheers

April 24, 2008 at 10:06 pm in reply to: Shooting a documentary on HVX200 final output HD

I produce for a company that supplies NG Channel, and from what I understand, they won’t accept a show that has more than 10-15% footage that comes from an HVX200 or similar camera. In general they’re looking for material shot on cameras with 2/3″ chipsets, so something shot entirely on an HVX200 is probably going to get the hand. We’re looking at new cameras now and are thinking about the Sony PDW700 or the Panny HDX900.

    Just my $.02.

    Cheers

    John
