If the shot isn’t insanely long, just manually keyframe a directional blur. I’ve done this before and it works well, just takes a little more effort.

  • Probably stayed up 20 hours a day for a week making that… keyframes out the ass… better design skills than 99% of the world. Makes me want to quit, haha.

You could probably just apply Gaussian Blur to all the layers that you’d like to be affected by Depth of Field, and then write an expression for the Blur Amount parameter that would link to the layer’s distance from the camera. Now, it’s pretty easy for me to just throw that out there since I wouldn’t actually know how to write that expression, but this website can probably teach you how.

Where do you live? In the northeast it’s pretty much $30 an hour if you’re brand new, $50 if you’re pretty good, and $75-$100 an hour if you’re nasty or very experienced. Keep in mind you can basically charge your clients whatever they are willing to pay, but I’d use that scale to get started. If you live in North Dakota or something you probably want to start on the low end.

If you’re on a mac you have to go into System Preferences > Display > Color and set your color to “Generic RGB Profile” or else you get some strange color shifts from stills to video. It has something to do with stills being interpreted by the color profile and quicktimes aren’t… or something. Anyway that should fix it.

Here’s a trick I use which makes the camera moves look more realistic:

Add an adjustment layer at the top of your comp, and add the Optics Compensation effect to it. Click the “Reverse Lens Distortion” button, then crank up the field of view to your liking. It simulates the effects of a wide angle lense, where objects on the edge of the frame move a little faster than things in the center of the frame. It’s also good to use roving keyframes with camera moves when you have curved motion paths because they’ll keep everything flowing smoothly.

Dear LORD you guys are great. Thanks so much. I found a CPA I’m meeting with tomorrow. I’ve been keeping records of my time, invoices, expenses, etc… so I think I’m in good (enough) shape to get started. I really appreciate the advice.

Since my “business” is just me and my laptop, I don’t see why I’d need a lawyer yet. Is that mainly for protection against lawsuits and clients who don’t pay?

Thanks guys! Would you guys recommend I find my own accountant, or just go to H&R block. You’re saying your accountant only costs $100? If that’s the cost then I’m definitely getting one. I have a whole file full of receipts I’ve been saving, so hopefully I can deduct a ton.
